Considered to be the class of the American League East heading into the season, Tampa Bay got off to a terrible start, played well at midseason, and then finished as an also-ran in fourth place. Along the way the team dealt former Cy Young Award winner David Price at the trading deadline in a three-way swap with the Mariners and Tigers. The final blows came in mid-October, when vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman bolted for the Dodgers after nearly a decade in charge of the Rays and then manager Joe Maddon opted out of his contract about 10 days later. All three events have implications to the Tampa Bay farm system. Having exceeded their budget in hopes of contending for a World Series title, Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg announced at season’s end that the $82 million payroll—which still ranked 25th in baseball—will be reduced for 2015. The cost-cutting should create room for another wave of young players on the major league roster, a wave bolstered in the Price deal with the acquisition of lefthander Drew Smyly, infielder Nick Franklin and minor league shortstop Willy Adames.
