Sox add 6 to 40-man
Even without a GM in place, the Red Sox keep making moves as the team
announced the addition of six players to their 40-man roster today.
The Sox purchased the contracts of righthanded pitchers Jesus Delgado, Harvey
Garcia, and David Pauley, lefthanded pitcher Jon Lester, and outfielders
Brandon Moss and David Murphy.
Additionally, the club today released outfielder Gabe Kapler from the 40-man
roster.
With the seven roster moves, the Red Sox now have 37 players on their 40-man
roster. Profiles of the six players added follow from the Red Sox:
Jesus Delgado, 21, went 7-3 with two saves and a 3.50 ERA (28 ER/72.0 IP) in
33 relief appearances last season for Single-A Greenville. Signed by the Red
Sox as a non-drafted free agent in February of 2001, the Venezuelan
righthander struck out 69 batters in 72.0 innings and held South Atlantic
League hitters to a .215 batting average. The 6-foot-1, 198-pounder recently
pitched for the Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League, posting no record
and a 4.08 ERA (8 ER/17.2 IP) in 10 games out of the bullpen.
Harvey Garcia, 21, went 3-5 with six saves and a 2.01 ERA (10 ER/44.2 IP) in
32 relief appearances for Boston旧 Greenville affiliate, his first full
season in Single-A and his first campaign pitching exclusively in relief. A
mid-season South Atlantic League All-Star, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound
righthander finished the year with 54 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 44.2
innings, an average of 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Prior to 2005,
Garcia made 39 of his first 51 professional appearances as a starter in the
Marlins (2001-02) and Red Sox organizations. The native of Caracas, VZ
originally signed with the Red Sox on June 14, 2002.
David Pauley, 22, went 9-7 with a 3.81 ERA (66 ER/156.0 IP) in 27 starts for
Portland, his first season in the Red Sox organization and his first at
Double-A. Acquired from San Diego on December 20, 2004 with Jay Payton and
Ramon Vazquez for Dave Roberts, the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder issued only 34
walks in 156.0 innings, an average of 1.96 walks per nine innings. Pauley led
the Sea Dogs staff in innings and starts and trailed only Lester with nine
wins and 104 strikeouts. A native of Longmont, CO, Pauley was originally
selected by the Padres in the eighth round of the 2001 Draft.
Jon Lester, 21, earned Double-A Eastern League and Red Sox Minor League
Pitcher of the Year honors in 2005 after leading the league with a 2.61 ERA
(43 ER/148.1 IP) and 163 strikeouts. Boston旧 first pick (second round) in
the 2002 Draft was also a mid-season and post-season Eastern League All-Star
selection, posting an 11-6 record and limiting opponents to a .215 batting
average in 26 starts. The southpaw last season was also named the Red Sox
Minor League Pitcher of the Month in June and July. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder
went 3-1 with a 1.69 ERA (6 ER/32.0 IP) in six June starts and owned a 2-2
record and 1.54 ERA (4 ER/23.1 IP) in four starts in July.
Brandon Moss, 22, last season advanced to Double-A Portland following a
breakout season with Single-A Augusta in 2004 when he earned South Atlantic
League Player of the Year after hitting .339 with 13 homers and 101 RBI in
109 games for the Greenjackets. With Portland last season, Moss was a
mid-season Eastern League All-Star and completed his campaign with a
career-high 16 home runs while batting .268 with 61 RBI, also setting career
highs with 135 games played, 87 runs scored and 31 doubles. Following the
season, Moss was one of six Red Sox prospects to participate in the Arizona
Fall League, batting .236 (17-for-72) in 22 games. The six-foot, 180-pounder
was originally selected by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2002 Draft.
David Murphy, the 2005 Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year,
committed just four errors in 131 games in center field last season for
Portland. The Red Sox first pick (17th overall) in 2003 batted .310
(75-for-242) in his final 66 games of the season, including a .379
(39-for-103) average in 28 July contests to earn the organization旧 monthly
Offensive Player and Quality Plate Appearances awards. The left-handed batter
and thrower led the Sea Dogs in 2005 with 75 RBI, batting .275 with 14 home
runs and 71 runs scored in 135 games. Murphy, 24, recently played for the
Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League, batting .319 (29-for-91) with
three homers, nine RBI and 20 runs scored in 24 games.
