This seems to be a good deal all around. I didn't understand why the
Padres, who are ostensibly very budget constrained would want a $2M/season
backup catcher when they had Piazza on the roster. I don't think Mirabelli
is a fulltime catcher, and the Sox are the sort of team who can afford
such a luxury as backup, especially with Wakefield on the roster. If he
can cut a run off Wake's ERA, and previous years' numbers seems to indicate
as much, that's tremendous value. I could just be talking with my
posterior though.
Seanez, for whatever reason, just seems to pitch better elsewhere. Some just
aren't comfortable in Boston. Who knows.
