When the Bronx Bombers take 2 or 3 of games of a series, it has been observed that Torre tends to start multiple bench players (e.g. Enrique Wilson, John Flaherty, Bubba Crosby, Ruben Sierra ad nauseam) in the final "getaway" game. Torre's reasoning apparently is that winning series after series is enough over a long season, and that once a series is in the bag, it's OK to rest the regulars and get some work in for his underused reserves. To borrow a poker metaphor, he is "playing with house money." Torre's tendency to run out the House Money lineup irritates Yankee fans to no end, since the Yankees' bench tends to be so weak they don't even have a chance to steal that final game, and the team concedes a winnable game due to the bench squad's inadequacy.
