The top talent in Puerto Rico has been in the US this week, and his private workouts have been nothing short of stunning. He's a 70-plus runner with impressive bat speed and a bit of power, and the teams that like him think he could develop into a true power/speed threat in center field. He wasn't even in my Top 50 on Saturday, but in the last 24 hours he's been attached to teams as high as Detroit at #9 (where his workout for them bordered on legendary), to plenty of teams picking in the 20s. Most likely to take a shot at him? The Astros at 21, the Angels with one of their picks at 24 and 25, or the Rays at 30. PGX- Fuentes' performances in workouts in Puerto Rico this spring have been scintillating, and have started plenty of conversations about the possibility of the fleet center fielder being a first-round pick. Fuentes was reportedly timed at 6.2 seconds in the 60 at the Excellence Games in early May, and has been in that range at other workouts as well. Scouts have regularly timed him between 3.9 and 4.0 seconds to first base on ground balls. Fuentes has gained some strength in his upper body and his bat speed has been impressive, although his power is still more of the gap-to-gap type, but coupled with Fuentes' speed should mean instant triples. His shortcoming is still his raw arm strength, which has not improved. One veteran scout made the comparison between Fuentes and a young Johnny Damon, remembering that Damon was a Florida state sprint champion at Dr. Phillips High with almost the exact same tool set.-DR ESPN Keith Law: The Red Sox coveted Fuentes since GM Theo Epstein and scouting director Jason McLeod flew to see him two weeks ago in Puerto Rico. Fuentes is a high-upside but very slight outfielder and continues a recent trend for Boston, taking higher-upside prep players even if they might need some development time. While he's got some pop, he seems to understand that his game is to go gap-to-gap, get on base and let his legs do the work. He's got a below-average arm, but his speed gives him more than enough range to stay in center field. More than one person has compared him to Johnny Damon as a future leadoff type. BA: A relative of Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran, Fuentes is an electric, game-changing player. The 6-foot, 160-pound center fielder is slender, but has wiry strength and can put a change in a ball during batting practice. Like a ticking clock, he hits line drives from foul pole to foul pole with his lefthanded swing. He's also an elite runner, clocking in at just under 6.3 seconds in the 60-yard dash at Puerto Rico's annual Excellence Tournament in early May. In game situations, Fuentes stays within himself, goes with a contact-oriented approach and lets his plus speed play to his advantage. These tools make Fuentes an ideal leadoff hitter. Defensively, Fuentes' range will allow him to stay in center field as a professional.
