A few roster moves to report for the Red Sox today. Victor Martinez, who is
starting at first today, and Casey Kotchman were added to the active roster.
To make room for both players, the Red Sox optioned pitcher Marcus McBeth
back to Triple-A Pawtucket and placed catcher George Kottaras on the disabled
list.

Kottaras, odd man out, heads to disabled list with back injury
Kottaras injured his back during batting practice around a month ago, he
said.
"It was just one day, swinging, I guess," he said. "I had done early BP on
the field, and it was really hot that day, and the stop-and-go, stop-and-go,
just fatigued it a little bit. It wasn't to the point where I couldn't
perform on the field. I played through it, and now we have this opportunity
to make it better."
As Kottaras explained the unexpected disabled-list stint, he was asked
whether he thought that Martinez' acquisition would mean that the 26-year-old
rookie would have to return to the minor leagues.
