Manuel, 26, played his first Major League game this season with the Cincinnati Reds. He pitched 4 1/3 innings over three games, all relief appearances. He began the season with Cincinnati Triple-A team in Louisville and was 3-4 with 10 saves and a 2.70 ERA in 46 2/3 innings. He made 36 relief appearances. Manuel was traded to Seattle on July 29 in exchange for outfielder Wladimir Balentien and finished the season with Triple-A Tacoma, going 1-1 with four saves and a 3.32 ERA in 15 appearances. Ankiel Add four Scott Boras clients to the list of free agents the Red Sox have expressed interest in. Outfielders Matt Holliday and Rick Ankiel, left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez and third baseman Adrian Beltre have all been discussed, according to a major league source today. Holliday’s name is certainly no surprise, since the Red Sox consider him as an alternative – perhaps more desirable, certainly more expensive – to free agent Jason Bay, should those talks fail. Ankiel is an interesting name, a left-handed hitter (like new outfielder Jeremy Hermida) with intriguing hitting and athletic skills but not a great track record in the on-base percentage department (.311 career). Gonzalez is a very good left-handed reliever who could fill the set-up vacancy expected to be created should Billy Wagner sign elsewhere to close.
