The Red Sox, at last report, have not opened talks with Victor Martinez
on a contract extension.
Total speculation, but does this have to do with David Ortiz?
If Ortiz is finished, might the Red Sox ditch him, make Martinez the DH
and obtain a catcher via trade? Buster Olney of ESPN mentioned Kurt
Suzuki as one possibility. Perhaps Suzuki would have made that tag of
Jorge Posada at the plate that V-Mart fanned on last night.
Martinez would command more money as a catcher than as a DH. So it would
make little sense to give him that sort of contract now only to turn him
into a DH come June 1.
There has been a lot of focus on Adrian Gonzalez. But maybe the better
move is to obtain a catcher and leave Kevin Youkilis and Adrian Beltre
alone.
Of course the actual move is to let more than two percent of the season
go by before worrying about such things. But at 1-2, calm and reason
have fled town for the weekend.
