Rockets see reason for hope with free agency approaching
Morey
第一個想到的大物就是小胖DW(死胖子當年就是你打爆我們的),可是胖子目前似乎只接受
Roy Hibbert
Camby
Eric Gordon - G
Roy Hibbert - C
Dragic - G
Camby - C
Lee - G
Omer Asik - C 公牛
Gordon, Hibbert, Asik
As another NBA draft came and went and as the Rockets added to their load of
young power forwards, they did notice they had done nothing to fill the void
at center or solve the uncertainty at point guard.
That, they hope, begins Saturday night.
At 11 p.m., the NBA’s free-agency period begins, with the Rockets searching
for answers they did not find on draft night Thursday or during the long
hours of trade talks that built hopes throughout the weeks beforehand.
“Obviously we have interest in top-level talent,” Rockets general manager
Daryl Morey said Friday. “We’ve been very straightforward about what we
need to do to get back to being a championship team.”
Few franchise players on the free-agent market can be considered top-level
talent. Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams is considered the prize, but he is
considered open only to remaining with the Nets or returning to his hometown
of Dallas. The Rockets are not expected to pursue him.
But they will reach out to a pair of coveted free agents who for different
reasons might be long shots just as great. New Orleans Hornets guard Eric
Gordon and Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert are restricted free agents and
in their teams’ plans.
The Rockets had hopes they could put together an offer the Hornets might be
hesitant to match, but the Hornets’ cost-cutting trade with the Washington
Wizards greatly strengthened their position to match any offer sheet Gordon
signs.
The Pacers are expected to be just as determined to match offers to Hibbert,
reducing the pursuits by the Rockets and other teams into more due diligence
efforts than determined quests.
But the search for a center could take the Rockets to another restricted free
agent, but one they might have a much better chance of getting to move. The
Rockets have repeatedly tried to trade for Chicago Bulls center Omer Asik in
recent years, especially leading up to the 2011 trade deadline.
They can now take their case directly to him.
Feelings are mutual
Considered one of the league’s top defensive centers, Asik is a backup in
Chicago behind Joakim Noah. The Bulls could be hesitant to match offers he
receives when he can command the salary of a starting center while still
coming off the bench behind Noah.
He will not be the only top defensive center in the Rockets’ sights. They
also will work to keep Marcus Camby in Houston following his strong
late-season cameo after the trade deadline move from Portland.
Camby hopes to finish his career here, and the Rockets have made no secret of
their plans to give him that chance. The Rockets also intend to match any
offers guard Courtney Lee, a restricted free agent, gets though Lee likely
will get more than enough interest to test that.
Their top priority is retaining guard Goran Dragic, who became central to
their plans with his play after Kyle Lowry’s illness. Dragic is an
unrestricted free agent and has said he wants to be a starting point guard,
an opportunity that might not be clear if Lowry returns.
Dragic also has offered the Rockets every indication he would like to be
back, both in a postseason meeting with coach Kevin McHale and Morey and
again last month in Treviso, Italy.
“We want him back, and he has said he wants to be back,” Morey said. “That
’s a good way to start.”
But the Rockets will be hesitant to sign free agents who will eat into their
cap room if they consider those players only of short-term benefit.
They could make those sorts of additions, but that likely will only come
after other options, including trades, have been explored throughout the
summer and then likely only in the sort of partially guaranteed contract they
used to sign Samuel Dalembert last season.
GM eyes big picture
“We would definitely make solid additions, but they have to be within the
context of keeping our flexibility so we don’t hurt our chances at any point
to get a more significant player,” Morey said.
Before it comes to that, Morey will go free-agent shopping beginning Saturday
night with much larger goals in mind.
“The free-agent market is like it is every year,” he said. “We’re looking
for guys we can add to the team that fit into the bigger piece of the puzzle
of being a championship contender.”

TAKING AIM
The opening bell on the NBA’s free-agency period will begin at 11 p.m.
today. The Rockets will set their sights on a variety of targets, hoping to
come away with a center, a star or both.
Long shots:
Eric Gordon, G, New Orleans Hornets
The Rockets will reach out to gauge Gordon’s interest, but any hopes that
they can make an offer the Hornets would not match dimmed with New Orleans’
cost-cutting trade with the Wizards.
Roy Hibbert, C, Indiana Pacers
The top free-agent center is also a restricted free agent. It might take a
max contract for the Pacers to think twice about matching, but the Rockets won
’t go that far.
Familiar faces:
Goran Dragic, G, Rockets
An unrestricted free agent, Dragic is likely the Rockets’ top priority and
has given them signs he’d like to return, but he also is seeking a starting
job and will be heavily pursued by the Blazers, Raptors and others.
Marcus Camby, C, Rockets
The Rockets starter at the end of the season, Camby sought to finish his
career in his adopted hometown and the Rockets traded for him at the deadline
with plans to bring him back.
Courtney Lee, G, Rockets
A restricted free agent, Lee likely will receive starting guard type-salary
offers. The Rockets still have Kevin Martin under contract at the position,
but have said they plan to match offers Lee receives.
High priority:
Omer Asik, C, Bulls
The Rockets have pursued trades for Asik, an outstanding defensive center for
several seasons. He is a restricted free agent, but a backup in Chicago so
the Bulls might think twice about matching an offer sheet.
