Chris Iannetta recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs
DENVER -- Following Friday's game, the Colorado Rockies announced that catcher
Chris Iannetta has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room
on the roster for Iannetta, catcher Danny Ardoin has been designated for
assignment.
Iannetta (EYE-uh-netta), 23, will be looking to make his major league debut.
The Rockies' fourth round pick in the 2004 June draft, he has split this season
between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs. He combined to hit .336
(103-for-307) with 14 home runs and 48 RBI in 91 games. He began the season at
Tulsa and hit .321 (50-for-156) with 11 home runs and 26 RBI in 44 games. He
was selected to his first Texas League All-Star team and was named the Minor
League Baseball Star of the Day for June
1 after going 2-for-3 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI in the Drillers' 3-1 win over
San Antonio. He was promoted to Triple-A on June 26 and has hit .351
(53-for-151) with 3 home runs and 22 RBI in 47 games with the Sky Sox. He was
6-for-9 with a triple, homer and 6 RBI in his last 2 games at Triple-A. He hit
.410 (16-for-39) against left-handed pitchers and .330 (37-for-112) vs.
right-handers. He has posted an overall .991 fielding percentage, committing
just 5 errors in 544 total chances.
Iannetta would become the third catching prospect out of the Rockies' farm
system to appear on the big league club as he would join Mark Strittmatter
(1998) and Ben Petrick (1999-2003). Iannetta was rated as the Rockies'
seventh-best prospect by Baseball America prior to this season.
Ardoin has batted .193 (21-for-109) with no home runs and 2 RBI in 35 games
over 2 stints with Colorado this season. The Rockies have 10 days to trade,
release or outright Ardoin to the minor leagues.
With these moves, the Rockies now have 35 players on the club's 40-man roster.
