[舊聞]2002/8/7 丹佛郵報 Hampton loses sinker
DENVER (AP) _ Struggling Colorado pitcher Mike Hampton is pulling back
from his sinker, once his money pitch.
"I will throw it on the side and try to work it out," Hampton told The
Denver Post. "I need to find a proper release point. It's just not going
to be a primary pitch like it used to be until I get comfortable with it
again."
The left-hander has been frustrated by his 10-24 record since June 1, 2001.
Around that time, his mechanics started to fail.
"I have gotten totally out of whack," Hampton said.
During spring training, pitching coach Jim Wright showed him a videotape
comparing Hampton's arm slots in 2000 and 2001. Hampton was alarmed.
"The main thing is that we want Mike to throw his sinker like his four-seam
fastball, straight over the top. Then change speeds off that,"Wright said.
"When his arm drops, the hitters are going to see that, and they are going
to take it. And if it is in the zone, it is flat and up."
In the meantime, Hampton said he would try to keep hitters off-balance by
throwing more change-ups, just as Denny Neagle did in a 2-1 Rockies victory
Saturday over the Chicago Cubs.
"It's the same thing, though I need to throw it straight over the top,"
Hampton said. "I still think I can get major-league hitters out. This
is a game of adjustments."
