Mays is gone
Pitcher Joe Mays, who was dropped from the rotation, declined an option to
Triple-A Omaha and said his stay with the Royals is over.
"I came here and, in the offseason, it looked like the best fit for me and it
just didn't work out," Mays said after cleaning out his locker.
"It was really tough to reject the assignment for the simple fact that the
relationship I had with Allard and Buddy and, most of all, Bob McClure. I've
never met a pitching coach as good as he is, as good as he is with mechanics
and treating his pitchers like men."
Mays, who had an 0-4 record and 10.27 ERA, couldn't quite put his finger on
what went wrong.
"I wish I knew because I'd be able to fix the thing," he said.
He knew, though, that many of his pitches were up and flat and that he
probably did too much nitpicking around the strike zone.
"When the game started speeding up a little bit, I didn't back off and go to
my offspeed pitches early enough. I just kept trying to throw my fastball,
and that's when I got hurt," Mays said.
Mays, 30, underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in 2003 and missed
the entire 2004 season. He returned to the Minnesota Twins last year and was
6-10 with a 5.65 ERA. The Royals signed him as a free agent to a one-year, $1
million contract.
"Elbow feels great, body feels great, I feel strong," Mays said. "I feel like
an ox out there."
Mays might have accepted a bullpen assignment with the Royals.
"They chose not to [offer it]," Mays said.
The Royals designated Mays for assignment to clear roster space for pitcher
Denny Bautista. Mays will go through waivers and, if not claimed, will be
released.
