The switch-hitter from the Angels provides some depth in Omaha.
The Royals have acquired outfielder Daniel Nava from the Los Angeles Angels
in exchange for a player to be named later. The 33-year old Nava is a
switch-hitter who was hitting .235/.309/.303 with 1 HR 13 RBI in 136 plate
appearances for the Angels this year. In six seasons, he has played 500 games
in the big leagues with the Red Sox, Rays, and Angels, and is a lifetime
.263/.354/.376 hitter. Royals fans may remember him for his grand slam off
Aaron Crow in a game against the Red Sox in 2014.
Nava is a patient hitter with a career 9.7% walk rate. He has fared much
better against right-handed pitchers in his career, with a line of
.276/.370/.398. He has a bit of pop, but not much speed. He can play both
corner outfield positions and is an average defender.
Nava has battled injuries this year and was demoted to AAA a few weeks ago.
Nava will report to AAA Omaha and will not be placed on the 40-man roster
yet, although he is a possibility to be promoted to Kansas City when rosters
expand in September.
