Venus has been seeded ahead of Mauresmo even though injury has prevented her playing a competitive match since July. "I feel like I'm being punished because she was injured," Mauresmo, the world number four, said. "It's a strange feeling and one I don't really understand. But it's something I have to deal with." Belgian pair Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters have been seeded at one and two for the Open, which starts in Melbourne on 19 January. With Serena Williams out injured, Mauresmo had expected to be seeded three. But Australian Open tournament director Paul McNamee announced that world number 11 Williams would gain the position last week. The Australian Open has traditionally chosen its seeds according to their world rankings but McNamee said they had made a special exception for Venus, who was runner-up to Serena in Melbourne last year. Venus has not played a competitive match since losing to Serena in last year's Wimbledon final, but made her comeback in an exhibition tournament in Hong Kong this week. World number five Lindsay Davenport said she did not disagree with Venus' elevation in the seedings. "In the past I have benefited from it. It's unfortunate that I am the one affected but that's how it goes," Davenport said. And world number one Henin-Hardenne was similarly unconcerned. "I don't mind too much by that.
