Seles hints possible comeback
Former world number one Monica Seles revealed she still intends to return to top-level tennis, but admits she is struggling to overcome a persistent foot injury. The 31-year-old has been out of competitive action for two years, but remains hopeful of returning to the professional ranks.
Seles has been working flat out for the past six months in a bid to regain fitness and insists she is closing on a return to action.
“The injury is coming along very positively,” she told Spanish newspaper Sport.
”I have been training for the last six months and I am nearly fully recovered. It's very frustrating because you feel capable of returning but your body won't allow you to.
”The most difficult thing is knowing how to handle the set-backs you suffer on the way.”
However, she remains realistic enough to accept that retirement could be just around the corner.
”My intention is to return, that's why I'm continuing to train, but I have learnt you have to take things as they come,” she continued.
”I don't want to have false hopes or rush myself.
”I want to come back at a good level and, right now, I don't feel capable of taking on the girls out there.
”If in the end I can't do it (return), I will have had a marvellous career and will be happy remembering it.
”Tennis is a sport with a short lifespan which takes up every day of your life. If you don't like or enjoy it, you don't have to put up with it.
”Your best years are normally between the age of 18 to 25 as we have seen throughout the generations, but there are exceptions - like Martina Navratilova.”
Seles went on to lavish praise on the new-breed of tennis star who she believes have taken the game on to a new level.
The former World number one insists the likes of the Williams sisters and the now-retired Anna Kournikova have raised the profile of the female game immeasurably and taken the sport to new levels of popularity.
”I believe the intervention of Anna (Kournikova) and also the Williams sisters has been very positive for women's tennis.
”Venus and Serena, for example, have opened the doors to new audiences that would never previously bothered to have followed tennis, while Anna generated the popularity that was necessary - there are a lot more people that follow women's matches now than before.
”But you shouldn't lose perspective because the game is about athletes and what matters are results.”
Seles concluded by claiming that her future will remain in tennis regardless of whether she makes a successful comeback, revealing she had already started coaching youngsters.
”My future is in tennis, without a doubt,” she added.
”I want to work with children and that is something I am already doing in America.
”They are the future of the sport and tennis has given me so much.
”Every day I remember how lucky I have been and I believe it is my responsibility to give something back after everything tennis has given me.”
