6/10/2007 9:34:00 PM It's always nice getting off a 15 hour flight to Istanbul completely exhausted only to find about 50 grown men with giant cameras swarming you like vultures while you try to get your luggage bags to the car. It was maybe just a little overwhelming, something I'm not quite used to. Normally Mike is by Maria's side during these experiences. As you all probably know, Michael has had a pretty devastating year dealing with the loss of his mother. I have known the Joyce family for 20 years and this loss hit as close to home as possible. Long story short, that is how I ended up in Istanbul. Mike needed some time to be with his family and I was asked to help out for a bit. As much fun as we had in Istanbul, I'm going to skip to Paris since it seems so long ago. Plus, If I talk about it i won't have an appetite for the rest of the day considering we had the same buffet there everyday. Not to mention I spent half a day trying to track down a Nike package for Maria that got stuck in customs. I told Maria I never ask for much, I just asked that I never be sent on a wild goose chase ever again in a country in which I don't speak the language and have no idea where anything is. Well, after almost getting sideswiped by 5 cars, we finally arrived at this amazing hotel in Paris and instantly everyone was filled with excitement. This Hotel was so nice that every time we walked down to breakfast, it was as if they were having a light show and there was a giant Laser beam aimed right at Maria. Only a few people can understand what I mean by that. You kind of had to be there. I want to bring up the Schnyder match because it really was a defining moment. I woke up that morning and Michael had been up all night watching tapes of Schnyder playing and he emailed me some notes to give her for the match. I won't go into detail, but one thing he wrote down was, "be tough, no matter what the score is and you always have a chance to win." It sounds so simple, however with everything going on I believe Maria took that to heart. During that match you got a sense that she truly believed that and she refused to walk off the court without competing to the best of her capability win or loose. It was one of those feel good wins and one that will always be remembered. Everyone was pretty pumped on how well Maria did at the Rolland Garros considering she hadn't played a competitive match 2 months prior to and having it been only her 3rd clay court tournament in about 24 months. For those of you that play tennis, you know how difficult that is to do. That is what led is to the Eiffel Tower and carousel to celebrate for my last night before going home. I was kind of glad I left before Erryn and Maria did their shopping stuff. They asked me to go to a store with them one day earlier in the week and being a guy it was a complete nightmare. God, those girls can shop! All in all the trip was full of adventure, and I will always be thankful for the memories!
