Re: [情報] MARIA IN SINGAPORE

I come from the Russian school of screaming

The TNPPostman received 50 letters last week with the
heading 'Dear Maria'. When ERNEST LUIS told tennis' hottest
star, Maria Sharapova, they were from our very own readers,
her eyes lit up...
December 31, 2007
WEEK in, week out, Maria Sharapova is used to being asked
various questions by journalists.
She must have heard almost any sort of question by now.
And sometimes, when they come from the media, it can get a
little predictable.
But when told that the questions I had for her were from
our very own readers via the tnppostman.com series,
Sharapova's eyes sparkled.
Early last week, more than 50 letters were sent in after
The New Paper's readers were encouraged to ask Sharapova
questions.
We were told she likes questions that really seek out the
essence of who she is, her world and life views, and what
has made her become the person you see dominating tennis,
sports and news headlines today.
And our intelligent readers duly responded.
WHAT TENNIS HAS REALLY DONE FOR MARIA
OF the lot, Tan Liang Yee, a 28-year-old florist, offered
the best opening question.
When Sharapova heard who it was from, she smiled, leaned
forward eagerly and said: 'Wow, a florist. That's nice.
What's his question?'
Has tennis developed you in any aspect, and how has it made
you the person you are today?
Sharapova replied: 'I would say tennis has helped me mature
very fast.
'There are so many people you meet in tennis: Opponents,
sponsors, officials, media. I even get to do charity work.
'It provides different opportunities that I probably
wouldn't have gotten, if I weren't in professional tennis.
'So you really mature fast. Off-court, it has helped
because all the match losses have really made me not only a
stronger competitor, but a stronger person in life.
'I was born into a family from (Homel) Belarus (that moved
to Siberia, Russia, in 1986, after the Chernobyl nuclear
accident. Sharapova was born the following year in Nyagan,
Siberia).
'And when you consider those circumstances I came from,
tennis has given me, maybe, even more opportunities than I
could ever wish for.
'At 20, I have learnt and seen so much already, and it has
helped me go through the tough times better as well.'
CELEBRITY IS A GIFT AND CAN BE USED PROPERLY
EVERYONE wants a piece of Maria Sharapova, it seems.
And sometimes, it's easy to forget that she's only 20.
Yet, it's tempting - as tennis' hottest celebrity of the
moment - for her to say no.
But this year, she's starting to come of age and realising
how to embrace her celebrity with a positive view.
Answering the TNPPostman's question - a combination of
similar points raised by our readers - she replied: 'That's
why earlier this year, I became a UNDP (United Nations
Development Programme's) Goodwill Ambassador.
'I'm involved with its Chernobyl recovery projects and I
plan to go to visit the Chernobyl site and help out next
year.
'Celebrity status, yes, there's the good and not-so-good
side of it. But it also brings with it opportunities and
the ability to give back to people.
'Especially people with few opportunities.
'My family experienced that and I appreciate how important
it is to use my celebrity status to give something back to
people.'
FIVE QUESTIONS IN SIX MINUTES
THE TNPPostman was given only six minutes of interview time
with Sharapova.
Originally, up to 10 minutes were promised earlier last
week.
That meant choosing only the best eight from 50
letter-writers.
But after her 16-hour flight from Los Angeles on Friday,
organisers told the local journalists from five different
newspapers and television stations, that they had to divide
only 30 minutes of one-on-one interviews among them.
Hence, six minutes for each organisation. That meant
cutting down to four questions, from eight.
To her credit, Sharapova didn't give skimpy answers to our
readers' questions.
IF I COULD DITCH MY TENNIS STAR STATUS FOR A YEAR, I'D...
BE nothing more than a simple college student.
Oh yes, can you picture Sharapova in jeans and T-shirt,
lugging a haversack and possibly a file around, as she
flits from class to class?
Daryl Neo, a 23-year-old national serviceman, asked what
she would do if she weren't a tennis star.
To his question, Sharapova replied: 'Oh yes, without a
doubt, I'd go to college for a year.
'My mother (Yelena) is really my inspiration as she was
very into education since I was in kindergarten.
'Because after that, I was very much home-schooled by her
and education is very important in my family.
'Going to college would be a different experience from
being home-schooled by my parents and it's not so much
because I'll get to meet different people and teachers.
'It's just that I can continue my education in an
institution, and just be a simple college student.
'Then, I might consider going into a fashion school after
that. I'd really like that, perhaps learn to be a fashion
designer.'
ASIAN FEMALE TENNIS PLAYERS CAN MEASURE UP IF THEY...
LOVE the game and then, get the right government and
parental support, and programmes.
That's because Ace Cheong, a 36-year-old photographer, used
the example of Michael Chang being the only man of Asian
heritage to win a tennis major - the French Open - in 1989,
when he was just 17.
His question: Can an Asian woman repeat the same feat? And
what qualities do Asian female tennis players need, to
catch up with their dominating Western counterparts?
Sharapova gamely replied: 'I think the advances in
technology have helped bridge the gap between top players.
'With Asian female players and tennis, we may see some big
results in a few years, because there seems to be more
excitement in the sport, certainly in Asia wherever I've
been too.
'With more youth tennis programmes, it is getting popular.
'Not everyone has to follow my example (of how her father
first brought Sharapova, then aged eight, to the US with
just US$700 ($1,000) in his pocket, to try and get her into
a tennis academy).
'But I loved the game when I first picked up a racquet. And
the most important thing is that players here, in Asia,
should not be forced into the game.
'They must love having a racquet in hand. Also, they have
to know their talents and be realistic as well.
'Their parents need to know this and with the right
government support, the proper facilities need to be looked
at to develop talent here.
'But it's important to have the view that you are really
investing in possible batches of players for the future.'
AND FINALLY...THE TNPPOSTMAN'S QUESTION THAT DIDN'T MAKE
MARIA SCREAM
Ernest: I asked Anna Chakvetadze about your screaming on
court, and whether she thinks it's a tactical ploy to throw
your opponents off. She said she thinks it's an
American-school thing, and can be seen as a tactical ploy.
Sharapova: Well, actually, when I first picked up a tennis
racquet at the age of four, I was already grunting. And
from the age of four to seven, the grunting became a habit.
So I'm afraid there's no tactical ploy there.
And during that period, I was growing up in Russia, so it's
not an American-school thing. I guess you could say I came
