By Douglas Robson, Special for USA TODAY Defending Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova is withdrawing from next month's JB Classic exhibition in Hong Kong after revealing on her website Monday night that she had arthroscopic surgery on her right shoulder two months ago. The right-handed Sharapova, 21, missed the U.S. Open and hasn't played since the first week of August when she pulled out in the second round of an event in Montreal. She disclosed that after leaving the women's tour to rehab her shoulder this fall the same pain returned when she resumed hitting several weeks later. She then had arthroscopic surgery in New York on Oct. 15. "Unfortunately after my 10 weeks of shoulder rehab, I started hitting and serving again and I still felt the same exact pain that I have had in my shoulder since March," the American-trained Russian said on her website mariasharapova.com. The ninth-ranked Sharapova added that she is now pain-free but only began hitting 16 days ago. She has not ruled out the defense of her crown in Melbourne, where she blasted through the field without dropping a set 11 months ago. The year's first major begins on Jan. 19. "I am trying to do everything possible to be ready for Australia, but I have promised my doctors, coach and family that I will not rush back," she wrote on her site. "The great news is that we have taken care of the problem that has been bothering me so much over the last couple of years, and now is the time to get into what I call 'match shape.' " In 2007, Sharapova received cortisone shots for a right shoulder injury that hampered her serving and sidelined her for several weeks in the first half of the season. In April, she sustained what was described at the time as two small tears in her rotator cuff tendon and unknowingly played with the injury through the summer.
