Spain ease into semifinals
Spain had the luxury of resting top singles players Rafael Nadal and David
Ferrer, yet still managed to share the day’s two final matches and complete
a 4-1 victory over Germany in their Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal on
Sunday.
Fernando Verdasco, replacing Nadal, came from behind to beat Michael Berrer,
who came into the team for Philip Kohlschreiber, 26 76(5) 64.
Finally, Nicolas Kiefer got Germany off the mark when he saw off Feliciano
Lopez 64 76(2).
Hugely satisfying weekend for Spain
That final defeat hardly spoiled a hugely satisfying weekend for Spain,
following singles wins for Nadal and Ferrer on Friday and a knife-edge
five-set success in the doubles, when Verdasco and Lopez combined to beat
Kohlschriber andd Berrer 12-10 in the final set.
Spain can look forward to a semifinal against the United States or France and
it’s clear where their preferences lie after their defeat to USA in
Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the quarterfinal stage last year.
"We’d like to take on USA again, partly because we’ll be at home for that
one," captain Emilio Sanchez said.
"We gave it everything we had against them last year and it didn’t quite
come off. We’ll be eager to have another go at them."
Spain v USA again?
Spain, of course, have joyful memories of the last time they faced the United
States at home in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas. That was in the final in 2004
on clay in Seville, which provided a raucous setting for Spain’s second
title.
Spain also beat France on the way to that final, 4-1 at the Plaza do Toros in
Alicante. If they end up meeting again this season, it will mean France have
home advantage.
On the near-perfect performance of his team so far this year, coach Sanchez
was careful to remember two players who helped in the 5-0 thrashing of Peru
in the last round.
"I really want to congratulate the players for the effort they put in, and
not just the ones here. We also won in Peru with Nicolas Almagro and Tommy
Robredo and they’ve played their part in taking Spain into the semifinals."
Hard work for Verdasco
Verdasco had to work almost as hard as he had in Saturday’s doubles win to
take Spain’s fourth point. Berrer surged into a 4-0 lead before Verdasco
woke up, and while he soon improved, it was too late to save the first set.
Verdasco lost an early break in the second but controlled the tiebreak –
making light of an outrageous net-cord that rescued Berrer at one stage –
and took an early break in the third that in the end proved sufficient.
Excellent victory for Kiefer
Kiefer, back in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas for the first time in over two
years, enjoyed an excellent victory over Lopez in the final match. The
30-year-old took the first set in 43 minutes and eased into a 5-3 lead in the
second before Lopez hinted at a comeback.
The Spanish left-hander held his serve and broke back as Kiefer put a wild
backhand wide on break-point. Kiefer held his nerve to stay in the set at 5-6
and took the tiebreak comfortably
