Fortson, McMillan at odds By Percy Allen(Seattle Times staff reporter) The trust that Nate McMillan once had in Danny Fortson has eroded to a point where the Sonics coach is no longer sure he can depend on the raging power forward. After six months together, their relationship has deteriorated from mutual respect to one in which they now continue to question the other's motivations. At yesterday's practice, they tried to downplay the latest incident when McMillan benched Fortson in the Sonics' win Friday over the New York Knicks because he arrived late to a game-day workout. The penalty didn't sit well with Fortson, who remained in the locker room when the game began and refused to sit with the team until general manager Rick Sund coaxed him out. McMillan avoided the topic yesterday and wanted to keep the focus on today's 5 p.m. game against the Washington Wizards at KeyArena. The Sonics can clinch their first playoff berth since 2002 with a win. Fortson, too, appeared ready to move past Friday's benching when he said: "Negativity only lingers when people keep it around. Personally, I'm not a negative person. Whenever I come back out here, I'm not going to be negative." McMillan was unsure if he'd use Fortson today, and there's a chance that the 6-foot-8 reserve will move to the end of the bench for the rest of season, with forward Nick Collison and center Vitaly Potapenko replacing him in the rotation. "A lot has gone on in the last month, some of that is due to injury, some of that is due to a family situation," McMillan said before the Sonics' 96-91 victory over Portland on Thursday. "You have to take all of that into consideration, but at the same time you look at what's happening on the floor. Then you go from there. "The other two guys have been playing well, Nick and Vitaly. I've got to see that from him (Fortson). I know what Vitaly is capable of. What Nick is doing. Or Reggie (Evans) and Jerome (James). "(Fortson) had given us a lot this season. We need to get back to that type of playing where he's one of the best rebounders. Over half of the season, he was a finisher at the 5-spot for us. That's what we want to get back to." For various reasons, Fortson has played in just nine of the past 21 games. "I think I lost the trust of Nate McMillan a little bit, it's not so much teammates. It's me and him. We have our, let's just say, differences." And Fortson thinks he's being fazed out of the offense. "We used to run pick-and-rolls, but now we do a lot of isolations because teams are defending the pick-and-roll pretty well, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work," he said. "Usually I run down the court and I try to set a pick and, the second half of the season, I got waved off from doing that. So now, I just go back to what I know how to do and that is to play physical underneath the hoop. "I can adjust to whatever way they want me to play. This whole year has been adjusting. ... I really don't know why. I'm just here to play, fit in and help my teammates. I know I haven't fit in in too many places, but whatever. All I can do is play hard."
