SAN ANTONIO — His shot selection is questioned. His pounding of the ball on
the perimeter gets old. His constant plea for calls from referees gets
annoying.
Point guard Sam Cassell's habits were expected to cause friction in a
Timberwolves locker room that has stuck with team-oriented basketball in
years past.
Instead, Cassell is showing he's worthy of making his first all-star team in
his 11th season. Cassell proved his point against the San Antonio Spurs at
the SBC Center on Wednesday night.
When Kevin Garnett was saddled with foul trouble in the second half, Cassell
hit off-balance jumpers. He drove through the lane for layups. He knocked
down three-pointers with a hand in his face.
Cassell scored 23 of his team-high 33 points in the second half to help the
Wolves beat the Spurs 100-93 and move into sole possession of first place of
the Midwest Division for the first time this season.
"Sam was on fire, it was like he was playing Xbox for a while," Wolves coach
Flip Saunders said. "He was knocking down every shot, and you can see he felt
it."
A day earlier Saunders said he planned to send out letters to coaches around
the league explaining why he thought Cassell should be an all-star. Cassell
was not among the top 10 Western Conference guards in the most recent fan
all-star voting.
Any doubts of leaving Cassell off the roster for next month's game should be
gone after the way he beat Spurs guards Tony Parker, Charlie Ward, and even
Bruce Bowen, one of the league's best perimeter defenders, in the second half.
Cassell went through a stretch in the third quarter where he scored 11 of the
Wolves' 13 points, with nine of the points coming on midrange jumpers.
"Sam carried us," Garnett said. "He had a few surges by himself that really
gave us the momentum back. In the huddle he was stressing be aggressive, stay
aggressive, and he did. He took some big shots."
The Wolves let their emotions get the best of them early having to go against
a Spurs team that has the stingiest defense in the league. The Spurs, who
entered the contest giving up just 82.6 points a game, held the Wolves to 38
percent shooting in the first half. But behind Cassell's 8-for-12 shooting
performance, the Wolves, who have won four consecutive games, shot a blistering
65.7 percent in the second half.
Cassell made up for the Wolves having no answers for Spurs forward Tim Duncan,
the reigning league most valuable player, who finished with 36 points, 10
rebounds and seven assists.
"We hustled and did a good job on the boards," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
"But when you have the combination of not stopping Sam and (missed) free throws,
that put an end to us."
"It definitely felt like a playoff game out there," said Garnett, who had 22
points and 10 rebounds. "I think that's why we had a horrible start because
we were so jacked up. We kept saying in every huddle to relax and calm down.
But when you have five jacked up people talking, it's not really sinking in."
Cassell not only hit the shots when called upon, but he also did strategizing
momentarily. Cassell went over to Saunders seconds after Garnett picked up his
fifth foul and suggested to his coach that he take the Big Ticket out for a
couple minutes to calm him down.
"He said just give him two minutes. We were thinking about it," Saunders said.
"At that point, the way Sam was, you could see he was going to try to take
it over."
Cassell scored on three of the Wolves next five possessions, including
hitting two big three pointers to counter Parker's two three-pointers and
help the Wolves stay close until Garnett returned with 4:24 left.
"One of us has to step up," Cassell said. "It's either going to be me or
Spree when K.G. is on the bench. One of us has to step up and tonight it was
me. We don't trip on who it's going to be. Our job is to get the momentum and
make our role players better."
