Minnesota Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett is giving some Minneapolis
teens something he missed out on, growing up, some "connections" to help
plan for the future.
On Thursday, students at Washburn High School in Minneapolis got a chance
to learn from genius behind their new 4 XL learning center.
"I'm kind of shaking right now, because you're sitting right here, "said
a very nervous Breonna Baker."It's alright, "answered Kevin Garnett, "I'm
shaking right along with you. You're alright, you're alright."
Garnett is shaking because his idea to help students reach future goals
is coming to fruition.
The Garnett 4 XL Tech Center, complete with computers and software, is
now a reality. The idea is to help students choose a career path and
then make their choice a reality.
Trebian Freeman is a senior who's finding the software a big help,"Like
for instance you can find an online mentor."
Trebian Freeman wants to become an executive in the music industry, in
just minutes, he's registered with Garnett's program and found a mentor
with similar interests.
"And she's guiding me through my application process of a business school,"
explains Freeman.
"As a kid I wanted to be an architect. I had all these creative things
that I wanted to be, and I never knew how to reach out and actually try
to reach those goals," said Garnett while explaining how he came up with
the idea for the XL Tech Center.
But students who utilize the tech center will find opportunities that the
man who donated the center never knew were out there. Garnett says, he
wants feedback from the students, "I think you measure it by how many kids
are using it. You can only take the kids, so to speak, to the water... but
it's up to the kids to drink."
At Washburn they are drinking and what is rare, they aren't asking for
autographs and photos. Trebian Freeman says maximizing the tech center is
the ultimate way to say, thanks to one of the biggest stars in the NBA,
"Every time somebody sees him they say, 'can we get an autograph?
basketball?' and .yadda yadda. We just want to show him the respect,
that he showed us by showing up."
"It's not time to talk about how many points he scored, or ... this is about
our education. We need to know what this experience is from him, so that we
can know what's good for us," said Baker.
The registered students will get an email, every two weeks that will
update them on careers, college admissions and answers to their questions.
Students can chat with their mentors online, at any point. Washburn is the
first school, but Kevin tells KARE 11 there are many more schools to follow.
