Superstar Kevin Garnett had 37 points, 10 rebounds and four steals to knock the previously hot Sacramento Kings off their perch. But that was Sunday. They haven't had many beautiful Sundays in a long time. 1. Item: With the win over the Kings, the Timberwolves ended a seven-game losing streak, but they're still hopelessly out of the playoffs for the second consecutive season with a 27-39 mark. What this really means: This unmitigated mess has the media from coast to coast predicting Garnett demanding a trade after the season, rookie coach Dwane Casey buried in the rubble and owner Glen Taylor with any number of ideas to turn things around in their worst season since Flip Saunders replaced Bill Blair as coach 20 games into the 1995-96 season. From the time Saunders became coach until he was suddenly fired 51 games into the 2004-05 season, they experienced unprecedented success. And despite the 19-12 record as general manager Kevin McHale replaced Saunders to finish last season, they failed to the make the playoffs for the first time since Saunders' initial season. It would be an exaggeration to say the collapse has come primarily because they hastily fired Saunders, but it has certainly played a huge role. What is even more obvious is McHale has horribly failed to build any kind of consistent cast around Garnett. In fact, today's roster only includes defensive-oriented Trent Hassell and minor role player Mark Madsen from the team that went to the conference finals in 2004.
