[外電] Davis suspended, Garnett waits for possible penalty

The Timberwolves took flight for Phoenix this afternoon engulfed in a cloud
of controversy. Hoping, perhaps, that it would dissipate in the dry Arizona
air.
Don't hold your breath.
Set to begin a five-game road trip tonight in Phoenix, the team has decided
Ricky Davis won't play tonight after his third-quarter antics Friday. The NBA
has yet to decide whether Kevin Garnett will play, thanks to his
fourth-quarter altercation with Antonio McDyess that led to both being
ejected.
Either way, the Wolves starting lineup will look a little different tonight.
First, Davis: Kevin McHale, vice president of basketball operations, said
Saturday that Davis had been suspended by the Wolves for tonight's game.
There was 8:33 left in the third quarter of Friday's double-overtime loss to
Detroit when Davis was benched after committing a turnover. Davis, clearly
frustrated, left the bench and headed down the tunnel at Target Center before
being coaxed back by teammates.
Davis remained on the bench the rest of the game. Some reports attribute that
to his refusal to re-enter the game. Coach Dwane Casey rendered the subject
moot by deciding Davis was done for the night.
Davis left after practice Saturday without talking to reporters. Casey said
Davis had apologized to his teammates. "He said, 'Hey, it's my fault, my bad.
I wasn't focused on the game last night,' " is how Casey paraphrased Davis'
comments.
But apparently that wasn't enough. In a decision that was mutually agreed
upon by Casey, McHale and owner Glen Taylor, Davis will sit tonight. McHale
wouldn't say whether Davis was fined, but he said no further action would be
taken against Davis.
"I've seen it happen a million different times," McHale said of Davis'
display. "Everybody gets frustrated. [But] you just can't have that happen.
There are certain things that are just out of bounds. And one of them is you
have to be ready to go out and play, have a clear head and be ready any time
the coach calls on you."
Casey would not say whether Davis had refused to re-enter the game. But when
asked why Davis didn't want to go back into the game, McHale said: "Anger,
frustration. Spur-of-the-moment stuff. I've seen it many different times and,
in my opinion, it's never been right when a teammate of mine [did that]. It's
just not right."
Garnett? He got into it with McDyess with about 5 minutes left after McDyess
had been called for a technical foul for pushing Mark Madsen to the floor.
McDyess and Garnett exchanged shoves that escalated into at least one swing
by Garnett after he had thrown the ball off McDyess' chest.
As of late Saturday afternoon, the NBA had not announced whether Garnett
would be fined, suspended or both. Tim Frank, the NBA's vice president of
basketball communications, said the league was still reviewing the incident.
Casey said he didn't believe the altercation warranted a suspension. If
Garnett cannot play, the Wolves would be down two starters.
To add fuel to this fire, Eddie Griffin officially came off suspension after
Friday's game. But, to nobody's surprise, he was not at practice Saturday.
Taylor said Friday that Griffin likely had played his last game with the
team, saying his status would be resolved in the coming week. It appears
Griffin will stay away until that happens; McHale said Griffin would
"probably not" go with the team to Phoenix.
Good news? Marko Jaric, whose sore thumb has kept him out of five games, is
ready to return. But then again, it was Jaric's frustration with his role on
the team that led to reports of trade talk.
All this, with a Suns team that has won 12 consecutive games awaiting tonight.
When it rains, it pours -- even in the desert.
