[外電] Quick read: Nash could have been a Timberwolf
http://www.startribune.com/511/story/948134.html
Back in the Jurassic era of the Timberwolves franchise -- when media folks
actually were allowed into NBA locker rooms after practices, to schmooze and
get to know players in ways that never are permitted anymore -- there was an
afternoon in the spring of 1996 worth remembering.
The Wolves had worked out some draft prospects that morning, and the college
players were pulling their street clothes back on before a quick farewell
meeting with the brass, then flights to some other NBA town to repeat the
process.
Sitting quietly on one side of the locker room, all but ignored, was a rather
gaunt, pale, smallish guy who seemed to bear a resemblance to the Kelly Leak
character in "The Bad News Bears" movie.
He was a point guard from UC-Santa Clara who had averaged a modest 17 points
and six assists as a senior, a kid from -- get this! -- Canada who only had
taken up the sports a few years earlier. Oh, the scouting reports were
promising and the young man's star was rising, but not nearly high enough for
the Wolves to reconsider.
They had their hearts set on Stephon Marbury, and acquiring him was
positively, 100 percent the right thing for Kevin McHale to do at the time.
Still, it's shivers-worthy to realize that Steve Nash was sitting there, a
couple of weeks before the draft, eager and ready and within arm's length,
available to a Minnesota team determined to add a point guard.
Little did anyone in the NBA know what sort of player Nash would become: the
consummate playmaker who makes everyone on his roster better, a throwback
sort of player who overlays the angles of a billiards table onto the
basketball court, a dazzling entertainer in his David vs. Goliath appearance
and a two-time NBA MVP, well on his way to a third.
