Compounding the misery of their 100-95 meltdown loss to Charlotte on
Wednesday night, the Timberwolves also lost one of their emotional leaders to
injury.
Reserve forward Mark Madsen left Target Center on crutches with a walking
boot wrapped around his left ankle after he severely sprained it early in the
third quarter.
The 6-foot-9, 250-pound Madsen rolled his ankle on a Charlotte player's foot
after getting caught in the crossfire as Trenton Hassell drove the lane and
was fouled by Primoz Brezec.
Madsen writhed in pain before being carried off the court. Initial x-rays
were negative, and he will be re-evaluated today. Madsen, whose status is day
to day, said it was the first time he has sprained an ankle since his
sophomore season at Stanford in 1997-98.
"I didn't miss any time then. I'm going to miss some time (now)," he said.
Madsen, who was scoreless in 5 minutes, 52 seconds of playing time, had seen
his playing time steadily increase coming off the bench over the past five
games.
Deadline anxiety: The NBA trade deadline is 2 p.m. CST today, and the rumor
mill is churning.
Journeyman point guard Mike James, who lost his starting job last week to
rookie Randy Foye, has been mentioned as the most attractive asset for the
Wolves to move. He is under contract for three more seasons, averaging about
$6 million.
Last week, James sounded resigned to being traded after Wittman benched him.
He did not back off much from those comments Wednesday.
"I'm going to play hard for whoever," James said.
Wittman knows these are anxious times in every NBA locker room, but once the
deadline passes, uncertainty cedes to reality.
"That's why they call it a deadline. You can't do anything about it but go
out and play," Wittman said. "That's why somebody would want you anyway, that
you're out there performing the right way in a positive manner.
"There's a calming effect that happens. Whatever it is that we've got left,
this is who we've got. You can't change it in any way. This is who we're
going to war with the last 28 games of the season."
Briefly: Ricky Davis unfurled his frizzy, Ben Wallace-inspired hairdo. He
said he liberated his locks on the return flight from Washington as a bouquet
for the home fans.
"I'm going to give them a little laugh and see if they like it," he said.
