[外電] NBA Draft 2007 - Evaluating Prospects-2
MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
1) Court sense. Does he understand how to play the game? This is the one area
that is diminishing more than any other and we are having a hard time finding
players that know how to play.
2) Intelligence (ability to learn). There is a lot to learn in order to be an
effective NBA player (offensive and defensive sets, game plans, player
tendencies, etc.). Not only must the player have the ability to learn, but he
must have the desire to learn.
3) Team attitude. Is the player unselfish? Does he put the team first? Does
he believe in team values? Is he willing to sacrifice for others? Does he
respect his teammates?
4) Coachable. Is the player willing to be coached? Does he want to get
better? Is he respectful to coaches?
5) Competitive. Does he want to win? Does he have pride?
6) Leadership. Not all players will be leaders, but it is a valuable
characteristic to have. It is difficult to win without good leaders.
7) Work ethic and intensity. Is he willing to put in the time to improve?
Does he play hard? Does he play with energy/intensity?
8) Responsibility. Is he on time? Does he take the time to learn the plays
and the game plans?
9) Pressure. Can he handle pressure situations?
10) Ability to get along with others. When you are on a team, you spend a lot
of time together on the road and at home. You must be able to get along with
others. This is important both on and off the court, and also in the
community.
11) Love for the game. There are few good players that do not love the game.
There are some that have a lot of talent and have learned to become a
professional and do their job as well as they can, but they will never reach
their full potential if they don't love to play. The NBA is a job, but it is
first and foremost a game. If you are not having fun playing, you will not be
as good.
