[外電] NBA Draft 2007 - Evaluating Prospects-3
SKILLS
There are too many skills in the game of basketball to mention them all here.
There are offensive skills (shooting, passing, dribbling, setting picks,
offensive rebounding, etc.) and there are defensive skills (shot blocking,
stealing the ball, defensive rebounding, handling picks, etc.). I don't know
of another sport where each player has so many skills to master. Even the
great players have skills that need developing.
I have never seen a player who mastered all the skills in basketball, and
even if someone did, then someone would create a new move, or a new shot, or
a new defensive trick that they would have to learn. When we are looking at
players, the important thing is that they have to have some skills that they
do in college, that they can also do in the NBA. There are some players who
make the NBA because they have a specialty skill.
It may be that they are a three-point specialist, or a shot blocker, or they
can defend big players at the low post, or they can pressure a quick point
guard. Some players have skills that work in college, but they are not big
enough, or strong enough, or quick enough to have that skill work in the NBA.
The more skills that a college player has (that can translate to the NBA),
the better chance he has of making it.
BASKETBALL ATHLETE, BASKEBALL TALENT, BASKETBALL PLAYER
I divide players into three categories:
1) Basketball athlete. This is a person that has the physical tools to play
in the NBA. We have no problem finding these kind of players. They are in
every park in every big city in the United States. There are very few of
these players that ever make an NBA team.
2) Basketball talent. This person not only has the physical tools to play in
the NBA, but he has the skills to play in the NBA. These kinds of players can
be found playing in leagues all around the world and in city parks. Many of
these players make it into the NBA, but few of them have long careers.
3) Basketball player. This is a person who has the physical tools, the
skills, the court sense, the character, the team values, and the love of the
game. These players have long careers. They may become a star, but they may
be a role player. They understand what their skill level is and how they can
use it to help their team. These players are difficult to find, but it is
what we are looking for.
You can find basketball players in college, in high school and even in "over
50" leagues. If the person has the physical tools to compete in the league he
is playing in, he can become a "basketball player" if he develops the skills,
learns how to play and has a team attitude.
