[外電] NBA Draft 2007 - Evaluating Prospects-4
10 THINGS THAT TURN ME OFF
1) A player that won't pass the ball ahead to an open teammate.
2) A player who constantly complains to the refs (and is slow getting back
because of it)
3) A player who blames a bad play on his teammate.
4) A player who plays for his own stats.
5) A player who is fast down the court on offense, but slow down the court on
defense.
6) A player who doesn't pay attention during timeouts.
7) A player who comes out of a game with a bad attitude.
8) A player who won't go to the floor for a loose ball.
9) A player who won't take a charge
10) A player who calls "And One" whe he thinks he is fouled (even if the ball
does not go in). The shot has to go in if there is going to be a "And One".
SUMMARY
We are not going to find the perfect player. No one is going to rate high in
every category. Over the last 15 years, more young players are entering the
draft. Many of these players have great potential, but they have not had the
time to develop. Today in the NBA we are often drafting players because of
their "potential". It is not that difficult to evaluate a person's physical
tools or his skills, but it is difficult to evaluate his "heart" and his
"mind".
When you are drafting "potential" it is even more critical that the player
have the right attitude, intelligence and character if he is going to have a
chance to develop. 15 years ago, most players played at least three years of
college ball. We had a "track record" to evaluate. We could see how much he
improved from one year to the next. Today that rarely happens. Last year we
drafted two players who had an immediate impact on our team.
Both Randy Foye and Craig Smith played four years of college ball. They were
much better prepared for the NBA than a player who came out after his
freshmen year. We would prefer that college players stay in school for four
years, but we can not control that. We just evaluate the players that are
available and do the best job we can.
