Three days before the start of the NBA regular season, Timberwolves coach
Kurt Rambis isn't sure of his rotation at shooting guard or small forward
because of injuries to Martell Webster and rookie Wesley Johnson.
Rambis said Webster, struggling with a back injury the past week, is not
expected to play Wednesday night against the Sacramento Kings at Target
Center. Johnson's hamstring has been bothering him again, and he sat out most
of Sunday's practice. Rambis was unsure of Johnson's status, but he was more
definitive about Webster, who missed the Wolves' final two exhibition games
and has not practiced in a week.
"It's safe to say he won't play Wednesday," Rambis said of Webster.
The Wolves still are waiting on results of Webster's magnetic resonance
imaging exam last week to determine the extent of his injury.
As for Johnson, who had an impressive exhibition season despite the lingering
hamstring concern, Rambis said he has not been advised to give Johnson
extended rest to help him heal. Johnson did not accompany the team to
Milwaukee for the Wolves' final exhibition game last Friday.
"We'll just continue treatment with him and see how it goes," Rambis said.
Telfair also ailing: Backup point guard Sebastian Telfair also did not make
the trip to Milwaukee and was held out of Sunday's practice because of heel
and shoulder injuries. Rambis said Telfair's shoulder is sore from his
collision last Tuesday with Indiana center Roy Hibbert.
If Telfair is unavailable Wednesday, Rambis might have to use shooting guard
Wayne Ellington as the backup to starting point guard Luke Ridnour.
Ellington, making significant improvement at shooting guard, was used at the
point during the Wolves' exhibition games in Europe against New York and the
Los Angeles Lakers.
Briefly: Wolves point guard Jonny Flynn, recovering from hip surgery, is to
travel to Vail, Colo., today to meet with Dr. Marc Phillippon at the Steadman
Clinic. Phillippon performed the July 27 surgery on Flynn to repair a torn
labrum in his left hip.
Flynn is hoping to get clearance to intensify his rehabilitation. He is not
expected to play until mid-November.
