His father, Walter, is American but was playing professional basketball for Real Madrid in Spain at the time of Wally's birth. After Walter retired, the Szczerbiak's moved back to the United States and Wally went to college at Miami of Ohio. At Miami of Ohio, Wally averaged 17.6 points and 6.3 rebounds over four years. In 1999, his senior year, he led his team to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament, scoring 43 points in a first round upset of the University of Washington. Szczerbiak was the sixth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played 10 years in the NBA for four different teams.
