Game 2: Jazz 80 vs. Hawks 72 This is the game that all the Jazz fans have been waiting to see. Jazz fans wanted to know if their number three pick in the draft was worth all the hype. Deron Williams lived up to the hype and more. Williams came out looking like a rugged NBA veteran and not a rookie out of college. Williams commanded the ball better than any PG the Jazz have had on their court since the John Stockton era. Williams was flashy and controlled the offense exactly how he wanted to. He took it to the basket when he wanted and he found the open man at exactly the right time. Williams had a move where he drove to the basket, spun around three defenders and laid up a floater that went over two Hawks defenders and rolled in. This game isn急 near as close as the score indicates. When Williams first sat down, hometown favorite Jermaine Boyette came in to control the point. Most Utah fans would like to see Boyette make the team, but after seeing him tonight, they should have a different mindset. The Hawks switched up their D and put Donta Smith on Boyette. This caused the offense to come to a complete stop for the next six minutes. Shot clock violations became the norm without Williams in the game. Kris Humphries was a different story from the Jazz旧 sophomore class. Humphries dominated the low post and got any inside shot he wanted. He led the Jazz with 17 points but needs to improve his defense and rebounding. If he doesn急 do this, he won急 see time on the floor for Coach Sloan. Second round picks C Robert Whaley and SG CJ Miles both were impressive in their first appearances with the Jazz. Miles looks like a kid right out of high school and looked to be nervous when he first got in the game. By the second and third quarters he looked a little more comfortable to be on the court but still was afraid to take a shot when he had one, he finished with 8 points. Whaley looks to be the real deal at Center and I would already pencil him in to back up Okur and Boozer. I would take him against Borchardt or Collins any day. Williams had a terrible first game and just looked bad. Williams shot 2 for 9 and finished with only 7 points. That doesn急 even begin to tell the full story though. Williams looked as if he thought he could take his defender every time and often found the ball either being stolen, slapped out of his hands or just missing a shot. He didn急 look to pass and looked as if he was trying to prove how good he was. This guy was supposed to be the most talented player out of this draft; he has a long way to go before anyone believes that. If he couldn急 even start for his college team, how is he supposed to start in the pros? He wasn急 even the best looking rookie on his team. Second round pick Salim Stoudamire was a stud for the Hawks. He hit three big threes and was fearless when taking shots. He didn急 care how big of a shot it was, it was his to make. He finished with 13 points for the Hawks. The Hawks main problem is they have no true PG, they also only have Stoudamire as a true 3 point threat. Stoudamire was given some time at point but showed that he was better at the off-ball spot. Not that he can急 handle the ball but when he was pressured, he looked to get rid of it quickly. By the second half, it appeared that the Hawks strategy was to just play one-on-one ball and it didn急 work to well. The Hawks were also trying to get out on the break when they could but they don急 have any true ball handlers to find the right guy. Boris Diaw handled the ball for almost all 22 minutes he was in the game. There was nothing overly impressive about him and I was surprised that his defense wasn急 better against Williams. If the Hawks plan on going into the season with Diaw as their starting PG, the Hawks will have the first pick in next years draft. I wouldn急 be surprised to see the Hawks start Stoudamire at PG during the rest of the RMR and try to get him more comfortable handling the ball in their system. Josh Smith had a bad night going 4 for 11 from the field with three of those made shots coming off of power dunks. He looked tired and was really frustrated by the end of the game. Josh Childress was the silent assassin for the Hawks. Childress came away with 21 points but you would never know it if you didn急 see a stat sheet. This guy just piled up numbers but was so quiet about it that it didn急 even really make an impact. Royel Ivey played super defense but had nothing in the stats sheet that showed his impact.
