Suns' Marion shows flexibility as NBA's most versatile player last season

By David DuPree, USA TODAY
Shawn Marion of the Phoenix Suns was the most versatile NBA player last
season.
At 6-7, Marion played power forward and was still third in the league in
rebounding. He has three-point range and is one of the league's best dunkers
and a superb defender. He will go back to his more natural small forward
position this season.
USA TODAY took this season's projected starters at each position for each
team and compared them to the other projected starters at the same position
in five statistical categories (from last season) that encompass formulas to
measure key facets of the game. The player who performs best in a category
gets one point down to 30 for the worst score. The player with the lowest
total points in all five categories is theoretically the best at his position
going into the season.
It's no surprise Marion has the best overall score of any player in the
league at any position. He is an eye-opening 31 points better than position
runner-up LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
"I don't think about stats or anything like that," says Marion, who averaged
21.8 points last season. "I'm just out there trying to make things happen any
way I can."
Position-by-position rankings:
Point guards
Allen Iverson had one of his most productive seasons but tied for fourth
among point guards in the rankings. He was 21st in team winning percentage
and 16th in points per shot, which pulled down his total productivity.
