Brown having career year with Hornets

The Jazz knew they traded two point guards last summer to acquire Derek
Fisher. They didn't realize they were sending away three of them.
But three days after Devin Brown signed with the Hornets just before
Christmas, he was pressed into handling an emergency assignment he had never
faced as a pro. Bring the ball up and pass it to the open man, coach Byron
Scott told him. You're running the show.
"Coach Scott knows my game, so he just said, 'We're going to ask you to
do a lot of things,' " said Brown, included with fellow point guards Keith
McLeod and Andre Owens in the deal with Golden State for Fisher. "You might
guard anybody from one to four, do whatever we need. You'll never know from
night to night what you might be asked. And the first thing is, point guard."
Chris Paul had suffered an ankle injury, and the Hornets were desperate.
Brown surprised them - the Hornets were 8-9 without their star guard - but he
didn't surprise himself.
"During the summer, I was handling the ball all the time," said Brown,
who returned to Salt Lake for the first time on Saturday. "So it's one of
those things where you just become used to it. I just went out and didn't
think about it. I just played."
Brown played so well - his averages of 11.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.9
assists are all career highs - he kept his starting spot when Paul returned.
And as the league's lowest-paid starter , he's also one of the NBA's bigger
bargains.
The Jazz never quite knew how to use him, coach Jerry Sloan said.
"I look back now, maybe I didn't give him the opportunity he could have
had," Sloan said. "We kind of searched for how to play him."
Sloan said he's not surprised Brown has adapted. "He doesn't turn the
ball over, and that's the first thing a point guard [needs]. Give them
credit for using him that way."
Even a fellow point guard is happy for Brown.
"He's had a career year. I thought he was a good player last year, but
he's definitely elevated his game a lot this year," said Deron Williams.
