Just Call Him Fess

The 2007 NBA Draft is definitely big man heavy… whether it's the very
impressive Greg Oden, the amazingly versatile Brandan Wright, or the big
kids from Florida, there is no lack of size in the 2007 class.
However in a sea of big guys, most of which will be power forwards at the
next level, an interesting name floats just on the outside of the "popular"
radar - Kyrylo Fesenko, a 7 foot center from the Ukraine.
Don't bother trying to pronounce his name, because everyone that knows him
simply calls him "Fess".
"Fess" declared last year for the NBA draft and withdrew after failing to get
a first round commitment, this year he's a bit late arrival to the process,
missing the Orlando camp, but plans to catch up quickly, with a slew of
workouts with more than a half dozen teams slated over the next few weeks.
"Fess" arrived in the states this past weekend, and has been spending a lot
of time in the gym at IMG Academy in Bradenton, mainly getting his body clock
right before embarking on individual workouts with the Bulls and Lakers.
Those are not the only first round teams sniffing at "Fess", the Pistons
thought they had hid him pretty well hidden in Europe, and after an extended
look today, it's easy to see why.
The IMG coaches measured him in today at 7'1 1/2 in shoes, logging in a 7'4
wingspan, with a monster 9'4 standing reach.
Impressive considering Greg Oden's standing reach was labeled "unreal", also
at 9'4".
Here's what you need to know… having watched a ton of Darko Milicic in
Orlando this season, "Fess" does not have near the NBA body Darko has… but
"Fess" showcased a serious low post game, Darko could only dream of having.
"Fess" is far more advanced than Darko is offensively; "Fess" has nice back
to the basket spin moves on both the right and left bocks.
He does not possess the "rookie" hitch most low post rookie have, where the
move to the basket is two motions, rather than one fluid motion as "Fess"
seems to have perfected.
"Fess" moves to the basket with authority, and with amazing fluidity. He has
range out to about 18 feet; his shot is pretty accurate as you'd expect a
European big to have.
His feel for the ball in shooting drills was impressive. Good hands, great
footwork around the bucket.
While Darko is clearly more dominate physically, especially since arriving in
Orlando, "Fess" has a more Rasho Nesterovic- like physique.
Another interesting note on "Fess" was his dead-panned, all business manner.
Most NBA draft prospects have a "stars in their eyes" look as they chase down
their dream, which is what makes the draft process always so interesting.
For "Fess" he doesn't seem phased by the process, and honestly plays like a
veteran - in fact today he was playing with Sacramento's Kevin Martin, and
you'd think you were watching a King's regular season pre-game, not a
would-be rookie trying to make the league.
It's likely still a reach for "Fess" to land in the top 30 selections, but
don't be surprised if a team in the early 30's jumps on the seven footer from
the Ukraine, "Fess" has some serious NBA game.
He just has to close the gap on some of the guys in the draft game before
him, and if there is ever a candidate to sneak into the first round from
obscurity, it could be "Fess".
Last year Saer Sene snuck into the draft, and landed with the Sonics at
number 10, so history has proven just about anything can happen and often
does happen on draft night.
