Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams took up golf a couple of years ago. "I'm trying
to get good at it," he said by phone from Dallas Wednesday as he prepares to
host his first charity golf tournament in Utah on Sept. 23-24.
"But the main thing for me is I'm trying to help kids out," said Williams, who
lost his grandfather to cancer on Sept. 11, 2004, and then was moved by the
drama last spring of then-teammate Derek Fisher and infant daughter Tatum, who
was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare and potentially life-threatening eye
cancer.
"Fisher's story this year inspired me a little bit. I lost my grandfather to
cancer. So I think that's an area that needs to be touched.
"I just want to do something to support the community, give back to the
community, give back to the kids," said Williams, who chose to do so with his
Deron Williams Celebrity Golf Classic to be played Sept. 24 at Thanksgiving
Point.
The tournament has drawn a strong list of celebrities including Fisher, now of
the Lakers, and several Jazz teammates, but, "I need some more people to come
out and play, need a couple more foursomes," he said.
Cost is $4,000 per foursome, and Williams said the money will go to Salt Lake's
Huntsman Cancer Hospital — in the name of Tatum Fisher — and to his own Point
of Hope Foundation. The foundation "seeks to provide support and hope to those
who have cancer and to people in need," according to his Web site.
For more about playing in the tournament, go to Williams' Web site,
http://www.deronwilliams.net.
The event is not open for spectators, and the course will be closed to those
not participating, said Kevin Kaplan of Point of Hope.
Williams remembers his grandfather's battle with cancer. "I'd seen him suffer
so many years, and he had told me sometimes he was in so much pain he wished
he'd never wake up. I'm glad he's definitely in a state of peace now, and
hopefully he's in a better place. I was very close to him," he said.
Williams said he's played in a couple of charity golf tournaments — one for
Illinois/Jazz teammate Dee Brown this summer, one last year and one on Tuesday
for the Dallas Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Among those expected to play, along with Williams and Fisher, are Jazz
teammates Brown, Paul Millsap, Jarron Collins and Ronnie Brewer, Williams'
former Illinois coach Bruce Weber and teammate Luther Head of the Houston
Rockets, Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks, Jazz assistant coach Ty Corbin,
former Jazzman Thurl Bailey, local pros Tony and Gipper Finau and coaches from
BYU, Utah, Weber State and Utah Valley State. More celebrity names are
expected, said Kaplan.

不過話說回來,
我認為這種小鼻子小眼睛的高爾夫球運動並不適合他們打,
是男子漢的話,就該辦玩肌肉的運動比賽!(例:WWE)
