Utah Jazz: Kirilenko gets more tips on shooting

Now the work begins for Jeff Hornacek and Andrei Kirilenko, to ensure that one
bad shooting night for the Jazz forward does not spill over into another game,
followed by another, followed by another.
Hornacek, the Jazz's part-time assistant coach assigned to Kirilenko, made the
drive from his Phoenix-area home for Monday's preseason game and watched as
Kirilenko missed all four jumpers he took, three of which were from 20 feet or
beyond.
After he arrived for training camp in Boise, Idaho, Hornacek said his challenge
was getting Kirilenko to make the necessary corrections to his shot from game
to game. That way he could avoid falling into a prolonged slump and watching
his confidence erode.
"We just talk about little things,'' Hornacek said. "You've got to find out
what feels good for him. I think the more he uses his legs, the better his shot
is and he has a tendency to not really spring off of them. That's kind of what
we're concentrating on.
"When you're shooting one way for so many years, you get used to that. It's
something he has to have the confidence to do in the games. Hopefully, he'll
get there."
Kirilenko had 11 points and nine rebounds in the game. He is shooting 44.4
percent (12-for-27) through four preseason games.

In reserve
With the Jazz breaking in two new point guards in Jason Hart and Ronnie Price,
their bench has struggled at times. It also hasn't helped that the Jazz have
missed Matt Harpring from their second unit as the forward recovers from knee
and ankle surgeries.
After a turnover-marred first quarter Monday, the Jazz's unit of Hart, Gordan
Giricek, C.J. Miles, Paul Millsap and Jarron Collins couldn't stem the tide,
with three consecutive turnovers in the first two minutes of the second quarter.
The Jazz lost the quarter 30-20 and went into halftime down by 17 as a result.
The start of the fourth quarter was arguably worse as the lineup of Price,
Miles, Ronnie Brewer, Millsap and Kyrylo Fesenko gave up an 11-1 run.
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan is still deferring a decision about using Hart or Price
as his primary backup point guard. "We've still got a lot of work to do and
those guys have got to get more comfortable in doing what we want to do,''
Sloan said.

Until he was asked by a reporter, guard Deron Williams said he hadn't heard
about owner Larry Miller's favorable comments about wanting to offer Williams a
maximum contract extension next summer. That five-year deal could be worth as
much as $80 million.
If such a deal is offered, would Williams sign? "It's going to be hard for me
to leave here,'' he said. "This is the team that drafted me. They have the
opportunity to extend me before anybody can get to me. It's going to be hard to
leave."
