Deron Williams Ready to Play, Reverse Recent Jazz Slide
By Chris Tomasson
DENVER -- First came the company line from Deron Williams.
"I feel great,'' he said. "It's always a great accomplishment.''
"我感覺良好,"Deron表示,"對我的傷勢來說這是非常重要的。"
Then came a more honest answer. The Utah point guard was named to his second
straight NBA All-Star Game on Thursday. But the honor arrives when his Jazz has
lost eight of 10 games and Williams has missed the past four games due to a
wrist injury. Williams will return Friday night against Denver.
Deron連兩年入選全明星賽。但是爵士在過去10場中輸了8場,Deron因為手腕受傷缺席了過
去四場比賽。Deron會在星期五和金塊的比賽中回來。
"It's a great honor, but it doesn't make or break me,'' Williams said after the
morning shootaround at the Pepsi Center. "I wouldn't have been affected either
way. I made it once and that's enough for me. I just want to start winning
again, and get some wins in the W column.''
Three weeks ago, the Jazz (29-21) was tied for first in the Northwest Division
with Oklahoma City at 27-13. Entering key division games against the Nuggets
(29-20) and at home against the Thunder (31-17) on Saturday, Utah has dropped
to third, three games behind Oklahoma City.
If you think Utah coach Jerry Sloan usually is ornery, check him out now.
"We haven't played well,'' Sloan said. "Our defense has been pretty much
nonexistent. We haven't been able to stop people. Our execution has been poor
at times. We get ourselves in a hole we can't dig out of.''
At least Williams is back after being out because of a strained tendon in his
right wrist suffered Jan. 26 against San Antonio. The Jazz went 2-2 during his
absence, dropping winnable games 96-81 at Golden State and 97-96 at home to
Houston on Wednesday.
"If I can play, I'm going to play. It doesn't matter who it is,'' said Williams
, scoffing when it was suggested he made sure he came back due to the
importance of the two division games. "I'm going to play basketball. It's been
over a week but it felt like a month. I just want to be back on the court."
"I hate being on the sideline. I don't like sitting out games or practices. I'm
just glad to be back out there.''
The Jazz still don't have a full cast. Forward Andrei Kirilenko, who would have
been matched against star Carmelo Anthony, won't play against Denver because of
a sprained left ankle and center Mehmet Okur did not make the trip because of a
strained lower back.
When Williams last was seen, he scored 39 points against the Spurs in the game
in which he got hurt. A similar effort might be needed against the Nuggets, who
are 21-5 at home.
"We know what he's capable of doing when he gets out there,'' Jazz forward Paul
Millsap said of Williams, who averages 21.9 points and 9.4 assists and is the
self-declared best point guard in the NBA.
Williams said his wrist got a lot better after it was in a brace for three days
. He's not anticipating his minutes will need to be monitored.
"Unless I start dying and have to call for a sub because of this altitude,''
Williams said.
Don't count on that happening. Williams averages 37.7 minutes, 13th in the NBA.
He logged 28 minutes in his All-Star debut last year, more than any West player
expect for one.
Williams will be back for the Feb. 20 All-Star Game in Los Angeles. But he's
got more important things now on his mind.
