Warriors looking to protect draft pick from whims of NBA Draft Lottery

The Golden State Warriors are trying to work a trade with the Utah Jazz
before Wednesday night’s NBA Draft Lottery to ensure that they’ll get to
keep their first-round pick, ESPN.com reports.

As things stand now, the Warriors would have to give their pick to the Jazz
if it falls outside of the top seven. There’s a 72 percent chance that
Golden State will end up in the top seven and thus be able to keep the pick,
but the Warriors apparently want to eliminate the 28 percent chance that they
’ll draw eighth or worse and not be able to pick among the lottery teams in
June.

The Warriors traded a top seven-protected pick to the Brooklyn Nets, which
the Nets later dealt to the Jazz as part of the Deron Williams trade in
February 2011.

Golden State would rather not part with any of its current players to make a
deal with the Jazz happen, according to ESPN. The Warriors would rather offer
draft considerations or cash to Utah.

While trades before the Draft Lottery are rare, an ESPN source said a deal
between Golden State and Utah is "likely."
