Friday, June 4, 2004 Robin Buckson / The Detroit News 2004 NBA Finals Shock's Ford to root for Lakers By David Goricki / The Detroit News AUBURN HILLS — Cheryl Ford jumped into her father’s arms after she helped the Shock win the WNBA championship last year. Ford hopes to celebrate again with her father, who happens to be Karl Malone of the Los Angeles Lakers, who face the Pistons in the NBA Finals. Malone is trying to win his first NBA championship ring. He joined the Lakers this season after spending 18 with the Utah Jazz. “I’m real excited for him,” Ford said Thursday before the Shock’s practice. “I love my Pistons. They’re my boys. But I love my dad and blood’s thicker than water. I want my Dad to get his ring. He deserves it.” Ford feels the Finals will be a physical series. She plans to watch the first game on television. The Shock will be playing at Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. “I can’t wait for Game 1,” said Ford, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound power forward whose physical playing style resembles her father’s. “We’ll be watching it on TV.” Ford plans on attending games at The Palace, especially games 4 and 5, when the Shock are idle. Ford called her father after the Lakers won the Western Conference finals. “I congratulated him after they won the Western Conference title,” Ford said, “and he said, ‘And ...,’ and I said I can’t wait until I see you, and he said, ‘And ...,’ and I said I can’t wait until you get your ring.
