Ninth seeded Russian Elena Dementieva downed an injured Lindsay Davenport 6-1
6-3 in 59 minutes on Sunday to waltz into the quarter finals for the first
time.
The 22-year-old Russian, who had never progressed past the round of 16 here
in six attempts, had an easy day at the office to upend the fifth-seeded
American veteran.
Clearly, Davenport, 27, was diminished by an ailing right knee she had taped
before the match. The three-time Grand Slam champion was unable to move
effectively and committed an unforgiving 28 unforced errors.
Dementieva faces the winner of the match between third-seeded Frenchwoman
Amelie Mauresmo and No21 seed Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva.
She is one of four Russian women to reach the fourth round this year.
