NewsID=21473 http://www.barbadosadvocate.com/admini/News_Photo_bv.asp?NewsID=21476 http://tinyurl.com/7vhkuep http://tinyurl.com/7jw9xdx http://www.barbadosadvocate.com/newsitem.asp?more=sports&NewsID=21473 Monfils, Azarenka record first victory on ‘de rock’ 12/11/2011 By Alan Harris It’s first blood to the pair of Gael Monfils and Victoria Azarenka as the curtains were raised on the ‘Tennis Pon de Rock’ exhibition series at the picturesque Sugar Hill Tennis Resort yesterday. Persistent mid-afternoon showers threatened to derail the whole affair, but the heavy clouds which spread across the west coast of the island eventually gave way to blue skies and bright sunshine. Much to the delight – and relief – of the moderate-sized crowd, the unwanted rains also gave way to an evening filled with high-calibre tennis. Held under the patronage of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and watched by several high-ranking government officials and British musical icon, Sir Cliff Richard, Frenchman showman and current World No.7, Monfils was paired with World No.3 Azarenka of Belarus for the main event. Behind a plethora of clutch volleys and deft drop shots, they comfortably downed the team of former World No.1 Venus Williams and World No.18 John Isner 6-4, 6-3. A sometimes slippery court surface made for a tricky arena, but for the slide-happy Monfils, a 2008 French Open semifinalist, the surface was just to his liking. His on-court antics, along with his eccentric hairstyle, also made him an instant hit with the appreciative crowd. Joined by Azarenka, the pair made a formidable team and were never pressured during the match, which lasted just over an hour. Behind several breaks of serve early in the first set, Monfils and Azarenka opened a comfortable 5-1 cushion. However, some sloppy play from both players saw the all-American pair of Williams and Isner pull the score back to 5-4, before Monfils held his serve to close out the first set 6-4. Initially, the second set was a much closer affair, with both teams exchanging breaks of serve early on. But inevitably, Monfils and Azarenka pulled away once again to close out the match 6-4, 6-3. Earlier in the programme, local players Haydn Lewis and Alyssa Fuentes had their time to shine. Left-hander Lewis, who is coming off a stellar showing at the 2011 Pan American Games, was paired with Azarenka, while Fuentes teamed up with Monfils for a mixed-doubles single setter. Lewis and Azarenka went on to win the ‘friendly’ match 6-2. There was also a highly entertaining ‘Drilling for Dollars’ exercise which saw Azarenka, Monfils, Lewis and Fuentes hitting balls at targets scattered around the court which were designated with a various amounts of money to be donated to charity. The ladies pair of Azarenka and Fuentes racked up $6 500, while Monfils and Lewis gathered $12 500. Another highlight of the evening was when tennis fan Sean Miells threw down the gauntlet to Williams and challenged the 7-time Grand Slam champion to a charitable US$10 000 winner-takes-all game. Williams won after the game went to deuce and Miells was passed as he rushed towards the net. ---- Gael Monfils/Victoria Azarenka defeats Venus Williams/John Isner in exhibition match – Tennis News In an exhibition tournament, Tennis Pon de Rock, world number sixteen, Gael Monfils, teamed up with world number three, Victoria Azarenka, to take on the American duo, Venus Williams and John Isner. Monfils/Azarenka duo defeated their rivals in the opening match of the exhibition tournament. The tournament was played in Sugar Hill Tennis Resort, Barbados. The weather report originally disheartened the audience as it stated that heavy showers were expected at this part of the world and it seemed like that in the morning as well but slowly and gradually the dark clouds disappeared; a bright shiny afternoon was enjoyed by the crowd with the flare of the most blistering tennis personalities presenting their skilful game play in friendly manner. Sizeable crowd gathered to witness these exhibition encounters that didn’t disappoint anyone as they were played with utmost passion by every participant. There were many elite officials and some government bodies were there to witness the encounters and encourage performers onboard. Prime Minister, Freundel Stuart, and British musical idol, Sir Cliff Richard, was also present at the opening ceremony and prolonged their stay to observe some eye-startling tennis from world’s elite performers. Monfils was excited to have made it to such an event that will provide some pre-season practice for him. Azarenka was quick to make co-ordination with her partner and overpowered the team of former world number and world number eighteen, Williams and Isner. It took just an hour to nail the American duo in straight sets with a cumulative score of 6-4, 6-3. Frenchman didn’t find it difficult to settle himself on a very slippery surface and aced his double handed backhands effortlessly to overshadow his rivals. He complemented the world number three in such a magnificent manner that it seemed like these two have been playing together for over a decade. Winning every allocated breakpoint opportunity and their conversion ratio of serves to success was the main factor that helped them to an easy victory. Venus made a winning comeback to courts against her sister in Colombia looked to have not regained her form and her co-ordination with her compatriot was completely missing. On a couple of occasions, American duo didn’t react to the returns from their rivals and ball sailed past them, helping their counterparts to continue their domination. Such events provide players an opportunity to excite the audience with their innovative shot making ability that can’t be seen during professional tournament due to intense pressure and cautious game play. ---- http://www.nationnews.com/articles/view/pon-de-rock-a-hit/ Pon-De-Rock a hit By Barry Alleyne | Sun, December 11, 2011 - 5:41 PM Barbadians lapped up international tennis at its finest earlier today, even if they had to wait over an hour to get their money’s worth. The 2011 version of Tennis-Pon-De-Rock brought out a reasonable crowd to the indoor gym of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, when world -ranked stars Gael Monfils of France, and John Isner of the United States showcased their immense skills. The pair played Barbados’ own stars, Davis Cup team-mates Haydn Lewis and Darian King in a special doubles exhibition match that had its share of thrills, skills and spills, before Isner and Monfils earned 3-2 win via the tie-break route. Monfils, his wiry locks flapping all over his face, and Isner, with his trademark white baseball cap and powerful serves, produced numerous shots which showed why both have moved up the ATP rankings in 2011. But Lewis and King were in no way overshadowed, as they kept the fans involved with some heavy shot making. Monfils, ever the showman, produced the two best shot of the match, a stunning between-the-legs half-volley at the net, and a between-the-legs return from the baseline. The Frenchman also left the crowd in stitches when he banged a serve at over 100 miles per hour past King, only for it to be called a fault. “Challenge” Monfils screamed, knowing full-well the electronic scoreboard wasn’t even turned on. Monfils then jokinly walked off the court as Isner served for the match. Isner, all six foot, ten inches ad advertised, duly served up the ace to close out the match. It was all part of the fun and games of exhibition tennis. ---- http://www.nationnews.com/articles/view/venus-served-bajan-love/ Venus served Bajan ‘love’ By Justin Marville | Mon, December 12, 2011 - 12:03 AM Venus was far from her best – yet more than good enough for her fans. The second Williams sister to visit the country was still No. 1 in the hearts of her Bajan fans despite succumbing to world no.3 Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-3 in their highly-entertaining singles exhibition during the Tennis Pon de Rock series at the Wildey Gymnasium last night. It wasn’t quite the result the former world no.1 was looking for but that didn’t matter to her near 3 000 strong supporters, who just came to watch yet another of tennis’ royal family put on a majestic show. And queen Venus didn’t disappoint, neither did her Belarusian counterpart, who seemed surprised at the rousing ovation both she and Williams received upon entering the playing area. But it didn’t match the response the latter received when she served out her very first game with a ripping out-wide ace towards the trams. However, Azarenka quickly followed suit, holding via a similar service winner out wide at game point before going on to show a vast array of powerful groundstrokes from either side while pushing the gangly American around the court. Nowhere was Azarenka’s supremacy more evident than on two successive passing shots; the first coming via a whistling backhand crosscourt winner right before a stunning forehand up the line that put Williams down 5-2 in the second set. Willliams did manage to hit a massive overhead from the baseline to her fans’ approval, before going all out chasing down a backhand winner that brought the patrons to their feet. It wasn’t enough to slow the “A-train”. Azarenka had already put her talents on display in the opening set with a series of singeing winners that came as she flattened out all of her shots from the baseline. Williams competed for the early part of that opening stanza though, as time after time both players simply wowed the fans by trading return passing shots. But Azarenka eventually went one better, taking a backhand early up the line off Venus’ serve that set up the only break of that first set to put the Belarusian up 5-4. Azarenka also almost fell into similar trouble on her serve while facing two break points, but managed to come up with a timely ace to take the set before to breaking Venus again in the next game. Williams actually surrendered two more of her service games after dumping several of her deep groundstrokes in the net, even though she was able to stave off a match point with the world No. 3 serving up 5-2. The break couldn’t have been any more telling either, with Venus producing a couple of lusty winners, including her trademark backhand down the line and an unreachable forehand crosscourt. Azarenka was just too good though, sinking an acute angle backhand passing shot at match point to break Venus for the third time in the set. “I was surprised with how I played because I expected to be a lot worse but it was great to be out there,” said Williams after the exhibition.
