The Washington Wizards will play the Miami Heat tomorrow night at Verizon
Center on Comcast SportsNet and WTEM 980 at 7:00 pm.
* Tonight's game marks the first of four meetings between the Wizards and
Heat this season. Washington and Miami will meet again in DC on February 28,
and the season-series will move to South Florida for a pair of games on March
11 and April 11, 2007.
* Let's get this over with...Miami has defeated Washington 12 straight times
in the regular season and 16 consecutive times including playoff games. Miami's streak has run for the duration of the 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06 NBA
campaigns. The last time Washington beat Miami was in Miami on April 11, 2003
in a 91-87 Wizards' win. Washington's last home win against Miami came on
March 15, 2003.
* On April 11, 2003 — in Washington's last win against Miami — Caron
Butler finished with a team-high 19 points and a career-high eight assists.
Butler's team, however, was the Miami Heat. Butler was a rookie member of
the Heat during the 2002-03 season when the Wizards last defeated Miami. Also
of note about that game…A sell-out crowd of 20,152 — then the largest crowd
ever to attend an event in the history of American Airlines Arena in Miami —
saw Michael Jordan's #23 retired by the Heat; a franchise for which he never
played. Jordan finished with a game-high 25 points, and was joined in
Washington's starting line-up by Tyronn Lue, Bobby Simmons, Kwame Brown and
Christian Laettner.
* Having won eight of its first 11 home games this season, Washington is off
to its best home start since the 1989-90 Bullets also went 8-3 in the first
11 home games. The ‘89-90 Bullets also won their 12th home game of the
season to improve to 9-3 at home; a mark which the present day Wizards can
match tonight.
* Entering play tonight, Washington owns a 10-11 record on the season, while
the Miami Heat bring a 9-12 mark into tonight's contest. The Wizards have
not had a better record than Miami entering a game between them since the
teams met on November 14, 2003 when Washington was 3-4 and Miami was 1-7.
* With 34 points against the Nuggets on Wednesday, Gilbert Arenas recorded
his ninth 30+ point game of the season, and helped the Wizards improve to 8-1
on the season when he scores 30+. Arenas has scored at least 30 points in
each of the last five games, marking the second time of his tenure in
Washington that he has scored at least 30 points in five straight games
(last: January 22-29, 2005). Arenas has never scored 30 points in six
straight contests, but with 30 points tonight, can become Washington's first
player since Bernard King in 1990-91 to score 30+ in six consecutive games.
Arenas scored a career-high 47 points against the Heat last season at Verizon
Center on December 30, 2005.
* In other news...With 79 combined points against Denver on Wednesday,
Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison increased their
league-leading combined average to 64.3 points per game...Butler had a
season-high 26 points on Wednesday night, and registered a season-high seven
assists...A win tonight would bring the Wizards to .500 for the first time
since they were 3-3...After 21 games last season, Washington was 9-12...The
Wizards were 9-13 after 22 games last year...In Washington's win against
Denver on Wednesday night, the Wizards improved to 3-0 this season when their
starting five each scores 10+ points.
