While awaiting the delivery of a corner in the tie at Ellis Park in
Johannesburg,
Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares stood on Villa's instep but the
Barcelona
striker managed to make it to the ball and forced another corner. Then as he
remonstrated with the goalkeeper, Izaguirre did the same thing, stepping on
Villa's foot which prompted the Spain hit-man to lash out, striking the
Honduran in the face.
While Izaguirre's reaction was certainly exaggerated, Villa's team-mate
Joan Capdevila intervened and had words with the Spanish striker in an
apparent bid to calm the star.
The incident, which was evident in television coverage, was not spotted
by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura which leaves the incident open to
further investigation from football's governing body.
"We can not speculate on specific incidents until we read the report. If
necessary, the Disciplinary Committee will study the pictures of the
incident and make a decision about it, " FIFA spokesman, Pekka Odriozola
was quoted as saying by AS.
