It's easy to say "Buck should have done this" or "Buck should have done that." Realistically, if Chen gets Nunez, or if Strop gets Ichiro or Jeter, we'd be saying that Buck made the right calls. Nunez hit a bloop single on a good pitch, Strop couldn't throw a strike, and Hardy made an error that gave the Yankees the lead. Our best starter, one of our best relievers, and our best defensive player all failed to come through for us in the 7th inning. I don't blame Buck for trusting any of his best players in any situation, and honestly, I don't blame Chen, Strop, or Hardy for anything simply because they have helped us win so many games this season. Yeah, we let one get away, but we have one more in NY today and four more against them in Baltimore next weekend. Forget about yesterday and come back to win the series today. I guess since our #1 pitcher has been out since mid July and everyone but Chen that has started is in Norfolk (Hunter in Bowie) and Matusz in the pen. We have a lot of depth with Steve Johnson available for a start, Zack Britton started late and has been pitching like last April. So Hammels comes back and we are set for strong September run. Tough loss today but we were in control and let it slip away. Chen was solid and was wondering if he would have went out for the seventh. After he walked Nix that should have been it and O'Day should have been there for the ninth. This is two games in a row that Strop pitched behind and in the last turned a 5-1 lead to a 5-3 win thanks to JJ Johnson. This game was lost in the dugout, & it isn't the first time. I know I've said at least 3 times that when Chen gets near 90 pitches & Gonzalez gets over 80 pitches, someone better be warming up. Last time I was accused of being an armchair quarterback, yet it happens again. You don't go to Strop in a precarious situation with a runner(s) in scoring position. Strop's glaring negative stat is 29 BBs in 58 innings. Only Gregg is worse. Hunter has allowed only 25BB in around 100 innings. You can't hit Strop, but he'll surely walk you. That's why he should only come in to start an inning. Someone else should have come in after Chen. The Yanks certainly know Strop's BB issues, & who better knows how to draw a walk than the Yanks. Buck has been great, but I surely thought he would be more cognizant of these pitchers' strengths & weaknesses. BTW, someone tell the O's it is OK to score after the 3rd or 4th inning! Look at it again. it was a nasty pitch. At 0-2 on Nix I don't think that ump was gonna punch him out looking unless he threw him a meatball. He owned the bottom half of their order. 0-2 2 outs you are going to pull your best at that point cause he loses a batter? I believe Strop has no clue where his pitches are going. Yet! Relief pitching must be one of the most difficult and under appreciated jobs in baseball. High pressure all the way. Chen should've retired Nix, but Strop came in and walked Ichiro and Jeter, allowing the Skanks to tie the game without having to swing the bat. Horrible outing by Strop, who's usually a lot better than that. I think he does better when he comes in with no one on. When there are men on, he looks tight.
