His torrid month of May must have taken a lot out of him. The Yankees' third baseman was named the American League Player of the Month for May -- the seventh time in his career that he has received the honor. Rodriguez batted .330 for the month, hitting safely in 23 of the Yankees' 28 games. Since the opener of a series at Fenway Park on May 22, he went 16-for-36 (.444) over his team's final nine games of the month. The hot streak coincided with quite a stretch for his team, as the Yankees went 7-2 in that span. The power was there too, as Rodriguez hit eight home runs and drove in 28. The RBI total put him in a three-way tie with Travis Hafner and David Ortiz for tops in the league. Not bad for a guy who was booed by his home crowd earlier in the month. Rodriguez heard it from the Bronx faithful back on May 9, when he went 0-for-3 and committed two errors. He won back the fans the next night with a 2-for-4 performance that included a home run off Curt Schilling. "They expect a lot out of me -- and they should," the reigning AL MVP said. "So do I. No one in this world expects more out of me than me." "He's one of the greatest players ever," teammate Johnny Damon said. "He wants to live up to that billing every single time." Rodriguez drove in three or more runs five times during the month, and he was second in the league with 67 total bases. And to make it even sweeter for New York, he beat out Mark Loretta of rival Boston for the honor.
