November 16, 2006 -- Who knows what next November brings - but as of
last night, Alex Rodriguez wants to be a Yankee beyond the 2007 season.
According to contract language, A-Rod has the right to opt out of his
mega-million deal after the upcoming season and become a free agent.
He would be leaving $81 million on the table for the 2008-09-10 seasons.
Of that $81 million, the Yankees are responsible for $50 million, with
the Rangers paying the remaining $31 million.
"Options are there for protection and choice, and my choice is to play
for the New York Yankees," A-Rod said last night at a Manhattan
celebrity poker tournament to benefit the A-Rod Family Foundation.
Asked specifically if he would become a free agent this time next year,
A-Rod said, "The contract is in place. My choice is to be with New York."
According to former teammate Gary Sheffield, A-Rod getting fitted for a
World Series ring as a Yankee isn't going to get any easier in his fourth
pinstriped season.
"I don't know, it's going to be tough to win a championship here and get
respect," the new Tigers' DH said. "I got mine [World Series ring] early.
His situation is more difficult. He has to earn it, but he is going to
do it. It's just a matter of time."
While Rodriguez appreciates GM Brian Cashman saying he isn't going to
deal his third baseman, A-Rod pointed out he has a blanket no-trade clause.
"I have control, it's my choice," A-Rod said. "I believe I will win with
the Yankees and with me being a big part of it. I hold the option and I
hold the card."
As far as being dropped into the No. 8 hole for the final game of the
ALDS against the Tigers, A-Rod said it wasn't a big deal. And he explained
he didn't need to clear the air with Joe Torre.
Nor did he understand the heat Torre took for the Yankees getting
eliminated in the first round in four games.
"Batting eighth, that's a manager's decision," A-Rod said. "It was one
game. As long as I am in the lineup, I am happy to play. To say Joe
was at fault, that's unfair. We got dominated. If we played them 30
games they would have won 28. He is a Hall of Fame manager and I am
happy he is coming back."
