Dec. 26, 2006
Well, here we are at the end of another year. I am sure many of you have been
like me -- scrambling to get ready for the holidays. My to-do list seems to
grow each year, and I never seem to start on it as early as I'd like. I enjoy
this time of year however, and have enjoyed spending the extra time with my
friends and family at all our holiday events.
Most of my offseason has been spent in Miami. I've made some short trips and
worked with some of my marketing partners, but most of my time has been spent
seeing all the people in Miami I don't get to see all summer.
On Nov. 15, Jay-Z and I co-hosted a charity poker tournament in New York City
to benefit the AROD Family Foundation and the S. Carter Scholarship Fund. It
was a terrific evening. Gary Sheffield, Jorge Posada, Cal Ripken, Dan Marino
and Mariano Rivera all attended. It was really something seeing all those
guys together in one room. We talked about sports and business and our
strategies for the tournament. The game itself was a lot of fun, with a
really intense final table. All in all it was a great event!! We raised over
$600,000.
Once again, I hosted the AROD Classic basketball tournament in Miami on Dec.
7-9. In addition to six South Florida schools, including host Christopher
Columbus High School, teams from New York and Philadelphia participated as
well. This year, Prep Charter (Philadelphia) took home the championship
trophy as they defeated West Palm Beach Dwyer in an overtime thriller.
In addition to watching some great basketball, my favorite part of the
tournament is spending time with the players themselves. I enjoy getting the
opportunity to speak to them -- hearing their stories and answering their
questions. Several of the players that participated this year have already
signed letters of intent to play college ball.
I remember being that young and having all the same choices. I am always so
impressed by these young men, and am already looking forward to the 2007 AROD
Basketball Classic.
The rest of the offseason has been pretty relaxing. I love spending time and
playing with Natasha. She just turned two, and is now speaking in almost
complete sentences. She spends a lot of time running around the house,
copying everything Cynthia and I do and say.
I hope you had a joyous holiday season. Have a safe and happy new year!
