Why is A-Rod going so great?
Why is A-Rod off to such an amazing start?

Everyone seems to have a theory as to why, at times, Alex Rodriguez has
struggled in New York.
He can't handle the pressure.
He can't see the ball.
He can't get along with Derek Jeter.
It's taken three-plus years, but the complicated Rodriguez seems to be
finally adjusting.
A-Rod entered last night's game against Minnesota with six homers and 15 RBI.
He is the ninth major-leaguer, and first Yankee, to hit six homers in his
first seven games of the season. Mike Schmidt, who hit seven homers in the
first seven games of the 1976 season, is the only player to hit more in that
span.
For the record, Rodriguez is on pace to hit 138 homers and drive in 345 runs
this season. Sad thing is that some Yankees fans will probably hold A-Rod up
to those numbers. The rest are just enjoying A-Rod's hot April, wondering
where the dog who went 1-for-14 against Detroit in the playoffs went last
year.
Since everyone has theories for Rodriguez's failures, we decided to provide
four for his success early on.
The Jenny Craig theory
Rodriguez lost 12 pounds during the off-season — mostly through dietary
alterations — to regain his full agility.
So far, so good.
Rodriguez's swing looks as sweet as ever.
Renowned physical trainer Brett Fischer, whose clients include Justin
Morneau, Joe Nathan, Carl Pavano and Randy Johnson, says A-Rod could be
experiencing greater flexibility and bat speed because of the weight loss.
"Guys need torque to be able to hit and flexibility is the key," says
Fischer, who works out of Phoenix. "I believe in building elastics. You have
to be fluid. I've never worked with A-Rod, but he looks fluid."
Fischer said players react differently to weight losses and gains. For
instance, one of Fischer's former clients, Bill Mueller, added 10-12 pounds
after the 2002 season and won the American League batting title with Boston
the next year.
ESPN "Baseball Tonight" analyst Tim Kurkjian thinks Rodriguez's weight loss
could be a factor in his surge.
"Last year was the first year I looked at (Rodriguez) and said 'Wow, he
doesn't look like the best athlete on the field," Kurkjian says. "He wasn't
heavy, but he didn't look as sculpted in his uniform. Now, he looks like he's
in the best shape of his life."
The, duh, it's A-Rod theory
Kurkjian points out that despite what fans and the media perceive as
shortcomings, A-Rod is still one of the greatest to ever play the game.
Incredible runs like these? This is what great players do.
"There is no getting around that he's been the best player in the American
League for the last decade," Kurkjian says. "It amuses me sometimes how every
one of Alex's at-bats are broken down. I wonder why he sometimes gets
treatment reserved for a middle infielder."
The home video theory
One of the raps on A-Rod is that he's vain, a guy who spends too much time
looking at himself in the mirror.
And watching himself on tape?
"I would be absolutely amazed if he didn't," says sports psychologist Nate
Zinser.
That's a good thing, says Zinser, who works at West Point's Center for
Enhanced Performance. A-Rod gains positive reinforcement by watching his
shots leave the park. His ego swells even more by watching his homers over
and over on tape.
"We do it a lot here with our athletes," Zinser says. "It reinforces how you
felt during that moment and what you did to be successful. It's a connection
that translates into performance. I'm sure A-Rod is watching tape of every
homer."
The 'Jeets' theory
Rodriguez let the world in on a little secret during spring training: He and
Derek Jeter aren't as tight as they used to be.
No, really?
Even though A-Rod told us something we've known for years, Zinser says his
therapy session with the media likely took some pressure off him and, even
Jeter, to perform.
Score one for A-Rod. He looks great. Feels great.
But Zinser cautions: "The media pressure will only increase as the season
goes on. If he has a funk, everyone will be asking, 'What's wrong with
A-Rod?' They will look at every at-bat."
