A-Rod: No Time For Talk, Just Hits

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Alex Rodriguez is not explaining anymore. He's
just hitting.
"I can't explain it," said Rodriguez, who hit 14 home runs in the Yankees'
first 18 games. "I know you guys are frustrated, you're looking for some
profound answer, but I don't have one. I'm just trying to have as much
fun as I can and really not give a crap about what most people are
thinking or saying.
"Let's see how far I can fly, and then I can tell you. I'm in the middle
of flight right now."
Rodriguez has already set the AL record for homers in April. One more
and he breaks Albert Pujols' major league record.
Rodriguez was asked about the possibility of breaking Barry Bonds' record
of 73 homers in a season.
"That's a great question for mid-August," he said. "Right now it's a moot
point to even think about it."
Another question bound to keep coming up is Rodriguez's contract, which
allows him to become a free agent after this season, or stay three more
years and make about $80 million.
"It got ugly last year for a while, and I just kept saying, 'I love New
York,' and people were thinking I was insane," Rodriguez said. "It's the
greatest place for me to play. I've always thought that, even when I was
[lousy] last year. Things haven't changed. I want to stay in New York, no
matter what."
Rodriguez's 23-game hitting streak, dating to last season, came to an
end Tuesday in a 6-4 loss to the Devil Rays. He was 0-for-3 with a walk,
dropping his average to .385.
Jeter: 'No Big Deal'
Derek Jeter was hit on the left leg, above the knee, in the first inning
and left the game with a bruise.
"It's really no big deal," said Jeter, who said he intends to play tonight
but was limping noticeably when he came out of the game. "I couldn't move,
so it wouldn't have been a good idea to stay in."
Mussina Throws Again
Mike Mussina tested his left hamstring by throwing a full bullpen session
and came through without a setback. He is expected to start Friday for
Trenton at Harrisburg.
"It's fine, considering [the injury] happened less than two weeks ago,"
Mussina said. "I'll give it a try. It should be OK." Mussina plans to
throw about 50 pitches for Trenton and be available to start for the
Yankees five days later. ... Outfielder Kevin Thompson was sent to Triple
A Scranton to make room for Chien-Ming Wang, who came off the disabled
list. ... Probable starters for the Blue Jays series: A.J. Burnett (1-1,
5.57 ERA) vs. Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.78) tonight; Josh Towers (1-2, 3.44)
v.s.Phil Hughes (major league debut) Thursday.
